Roster Report · Notes, Quotes · Granderson proves his health at plate, in field

--RHP Rafael Soriano seemed to have no trouble with the move from closer to setup man, as he retired the heart of the Detroit lineup in order Thursday. Soriano struck out 1B Miguel Cabrera before retiring DH Victor Martinez and LF Ryan Raburn, handing the ball to RHP Mariano Rivera for the save.

--LHP CC Sabathia allowed two earned runs over six innings in the opener, giving up six hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. Sabathia wasn't bothered by the 42-degree cold, though the windy conditions made things a little more difficult. Sabathia was upset with himself for giving up some two-strike hits, but he was pleased with his outing overall in the no-decision.

--C Russell Martin had a hit, a stolen base and two runs in his Yankees debut. Martin singled and later stole third base in the third inning, putting pressure on RHP Justin Verlander before the Tigers pitcher served up a three-run home run by 1B Mark Teixeira.

"He scored a couple runs, blocked a couple balls and did a great job with our pitching staff," manager Joe Girardi said. "It was great to see."

--RHP A.J. Burnett is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Tigers even though he was still nursing a bad cold Thursday. Burnett said he planned to pitch even if he were still under the weather.

--1B Mark Teixeira has been a notoriously slow starter during his first two years with the Yankees, but he got off to a good start Thursday, belting a three-run home run against Detroit. "I hope it means a fast start," manager Joe Girardi said. "It's always great to get the first hit out of the way and feel like you're swinging the bat good."

11 -- Consecutive Opening Day games started at catcher by Jorge Posada prior to Thursday, when Russell Martin was behind the plate. Posada served as the Yankees' designated hitter, going 0-for-4.

"No more significant than any other win. The big thing was getting the first win of this 162 out of the way." -- CF Curtis Granderson, on beating the Tigers -- his former team -- with a big home run on Opening Day.
