--RHP Ivan Nova picked up the win in his first start of 2011, throwing six innings of three-run ball. Nova retired C Joe Mauer with two outs in the fifth and the tying run on second base, something he had trouble doing last season in big spots with men in scoring position.
"These are things that he's going to have to do for us," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's going to have to be able to get through these situations. It's all part of learning how to pitch at this level."
--3B Alex Rodriguez hit his second home run of the season, No. 615 in his career. Rodriguez had two RBI, giving him 1,835, which moved him past Hall of Famer Dave Winfield and tied Rafael Palmeiro for 14th place on the all-time list. Up next on the list is Ken Griffey Jr. -- a former teammate of Rodriguez -- with 1,836.
--SS Derek Jeter will get his first game as a leadoff hitter Tuesday, as the Yankees will face Minnesota LHP Brian Duensing. Jeter, who has opened the year 2-for-14 in the No. 2 spot, will hit first against southpaws this year.
--OF Andruw Jones will see his first action of the season Tuesday, starting in left field against Twins LHP Brian Duensing. Jones will see the majority of his playing time this season against lefties, relegating either LF Brett Gardner or CF Curtis Granderson to the bench on days he starts.
--Manager Joe Girardi expressed a lack of concern about the diminished velocity on RHP Phil Hughes' fastball Sunday, pointing out that Hughes had two extra starts in spring training last season and didn't make his debut until April 15. Hughes threw his fastball between 87-91 mph Sunday. "It's one start," Girardi said. "The guy's thrown four innings. Let's not make too much of four innings."
BY THE NUMBERS
0.50 -- With his scoreless inning Monday, RHP Rafael Soriano has allowed one earned run in his last 18 innings against American League Central teams dating back to last season, a 0.50 ERA.
QUOTE TO NOTE
