Nova stumbles after strong stretch

Nova stumbles after strong stretch · Roster Report · Notes, Quotes

Three steps forward, one step back. Such is life for a rookie pitcher.

Ivan Nova had given the Yankees three consecutive solid outings entering his start against the Royals on Thursday night, but the 24-year-old right-hander was knocked around for eight runs on 10 hits and two walks, though four of the runs were unearned.

"I know a start like that is going to happen," Nova said after the Yankees' 11-5 loss. "That's the game. It's in the past for me now. I have 20-something more."

Nova escaped a jam in the first inning, leaving two Royals in scoring position. He couldn't repeat the feat in the second, giving up six runs as Kansas City sent 10 hitters to the plate. The Yankees made a pair of errors to make life harder on their starter, but Nova took responsibility for not being able to stop the bleeding.

"Errors are part of the game," Nova said. "When that happens, I have to try to get the outs. That inning was kind of difficult for me, because I didn't do my job in that inning."

Nova's eight-run night marked the most runs allowed by a Yankees starter this season. He's now 3-3 with a 4.70 ERA in seven starts and one relief appearance.

"I didn't think he had his good stuff," manager Joe Girardi said.
