Nova stumbles after strong stretch · Roster Report · Notes, Quotes

--2B Robinson Cano was back in the lineup and homered Thursday after being drilled in the helmet by a pitch in the fifth inning of Wednesday's game. Cano underwent a CT scan Wednesday, then took part in a battery of tests Thursday to make sure he wasn't suffering from any concussion symptoms.

--RHP Amaury Sanit allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings after being added to the Yankees' roster earlier Thursday. Sanit was 2-0 with a 4.96 ERA in eight games (two starts) with Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To make room for Sanit on the 25-man roster, INF Ramiro Pena was optioned back to Class AAA. RHP Jess Todd, picked up last week off waivers from the Indians, was designated for assignment to clear space for Sanit on the 40-man roster.

Pena had been called up earlier this week, and he didn't get into a game with the Yankees. Todd had allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings over two appearances for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

--C Russell Martin was given the night off Thursday, having caught the entire 11-inning, 4 1/2-hour game Wednesday. Manager Joe Girardi wants Martin to be in position to catch all three games this weekend against the rival Red Sox.

--C Francisco Cervelli, who hit his first career grand slam Sunday in Texas, hit a two-run double with the bases loaded Thursday. Cervelli is now 8-for-15 (.533) with 24 RBI in bases-loaded situations during his career.

--3B Alex Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the eighth inning Thursday, snapping a 65-at-bat homerless streak and an 11-game streak without an extra-base hit. The 65-at-bat streak was the second-longest homerless skid of his career, behind only a 72-at-bat stretch in 2009.

0 -- The Yankees struck out zero times Thursday, the first game in which they did not strike out since June 19, 2001.

"We have one sloppy game, I don't like it. When you have three, four or five in two weeks, it does bother me. I know we're capable of playing much better." -- Manager Joe Girardi, on the Yankees' 12 errors in the past seven games.
