American League All-Star manager Joe Maddon tried to clear up the reasons he picked closer Andrew Bailey instead of catcher Kurt Suzuki to represent the A's on Tuesday in St. Louis.

For starters, Maddon said he didn't need a third catcher behind starter Joe Mauer (who won the fans' vote) and Victor Martinez (who got the players' vote). Second, Maddon said Bailey is deserving.

"First of all, two catchers equals three catchers," said Maddon, referring to the catchers' re-entry rule, "because you only use the third catcher if one of the two got hurt. So whoever starts is really the third catcher once he comes out of the game because you're able to replace the No. 2 guy in the event of an injury."

While Bailey is a rookie reliever who was in Class AA last year, Suzuki is an everyday catcher, perhaps the team's MVP for his offense as well as his handling of a young rotation.

"In regard to the individual player chosen, I did some research, and I called some different people," Maddon said. "I really am a big fan of Suzuki. I think he's very good. I think he does a great job. He's one of the better blockers of balls in the dirt. He throws well. He works good at-bats. He's a nice player.

"The other guy, Bailey, though, his numbers are very impressive also. I don't think you can denigrate what he's done compared with what Suzuki has done, either. It's a tough decision, like it is in many situations. But what I try to do is look at it realistically, get as many opinions as I possibly could and made a decision."

Though he suggested he spoke with A's people and sought input, maybe even recommendations, Maddon said, "In the end, it's my decision, not theirs."

Thought I'd share with everyone the site I use to find player contracts. Too many of the major media outlets do a poor job on this and the this site I use is very detailed and accurate. The more people around here with knowledge of our contracts, the quality of the posts go up as people become more knowledgable. Here we are. Enjoy.

Players with salaries not listed are probably

First of all, I'm sorry I have to bring the topic up because I thought this might be the year Jack Cust would be able to improve some of the weaker areas of his game. And by all indications through the first month-and-a-half or so, it seemed he had turned a corner. No one expected him to become a contact hitter and/or a gold gl ...(more)

So i was looking around the web at some A's stuff and noticed that the team was called the "white elephants" by owner John Mcgraw. Then the A's incorporated it and now its our mascot. But a white elephant is a valuable possesion of which its owner cannot dispose and whose cost of upkeep is out of proportion to its usefulness. So..... um..... ya..... Why the hell is that our mascot lol?

I have written this thread now for the third season in a row, and I cannot help but wonder whether the A's manager and pitching coach ever think about this? Why is it that for hitting the manager will try to split up the left and right, but will not do the same when it comes to the pitching staff? If you are trying to offensively give your team an advantage by not grouping hitters ...(more)

I am just wondering why this guy still gets to play so much?  I am not an A's fan but my best friend is and he is constantly telling me that Crosby is the worst every day player he has ever seen.  I know Crosby doesnt literally play every day but why in the hell does he get so much playing time?  Why don't the A's just cut ties with him already and give someone else a chance?  ...(more)

Here is a quote from a story in the Denver Post from Carlos Gonzalez:

Mark Ellis (calf) is scheduled to come off the disabled list Sunday.

(POLL) It's July 1st. We're in last place going nowhere, at least contending-wise. In all likelihood, a month from now (or earlier) Matt Holliday will be wearing a different uniform. We're aware of it. The organization is aware of it. Other teams are aware of it. Matt Holliday is aware of it. I'm not even going to get into who/what ...(more)

The following is a link to the original Moneyball script before the rewrite. It's a pretty big .pdf document, but it's interesting to read and see how they were going to make this book into a movie:

Sometimes you just have to settle for a career day at the plate.

Matt Sulentic came to bat in the ninth inning with one goal in mind: a double. Up the line, in the gap, off the wall... anywhere.

"Honestly, I was like, I don't care where it goes, I'm running to second," he said.

The former t ...(more)
