MEDICAL WATCH:

DH/1B Mike Sweeney (sore left knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 29. He had arthroscopic knee surgery to repair cartilage damage in his left knee on June 11, and he had his right knee repaired at the same time. His knees locked up after running July 28, and he planned to head back to Arizona for another week of rehab there.

3B Eric Chavez (sore right shoulder) missed two games before playing June 25-26 as the designated hitter. He sat out again June 27, and was back in the lineup as the DH on June 30 and July 1. He went back on the 15-day disabled list July 2. He resumed baseball activities July 25 and said that the labrum in his right shoulder is so frayed that he does not believe it can be surgically repaired. Chavez, out since early July with shoulder soreness, had surgery to debride the area in September but the shoulder became so painful this summer that he was having trouble swinging the bat.

DH Frank Thomas (inflamed right quadriceps) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 28. He was cleared to begin hitting July 8. He ran for the first time July 25, then took batting practice July 27-29. He might return without a rehab assignment.

1B Daric Barton (neck strain, head laceration) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 14, after getting hurt while diving into a too-shallow pool. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Sacramento on July 24, and he hopes to return to the A's in early August.

RHP Keith Foulke (right shoulder inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list July 4. He was scheduled to throw a simulated game July 29, but that plan was scrapped, and he was to throw a side session July 30 instead.

RHP Joey Devine (right elbow strain) went on the disabled list retroactive to May 27. He started light throwing on June 4, then had to shut it down for a few days due to an adjustment in his anti-inflammatory medication. He resumed throwing June 14, and he threw off a mound for the first time June 27. He started a rehab assignment with Class AAA Sacramento on July 28.

OF Chris Denorfia (lower back stiffness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 5. He played four games on a rehab assignment with Class AAA Sacramento in late May before suffering a setback.
