Altered lineup produces offense, but not a win · Roster Report · Notes, Quotes

Oakland went with the same lineup in each of the first three games of the season. Then the A's faced a left-handed starter, Toronto's Jo-Jo Reyes, and the lineup was different in many ways Tuesday.

Out: designated hitter Hideki Matsui and shortstop Cliff Pennington. In: Conor Jackson (in left field, with Josh Willingham serving as the DH) and shortstop Andy LaRoche.

Jackson singled and doubled in his first two at-bats, and in his third, the Blue Jays brought in a right-hander, Carlos Villanueva, to face him. Jackson walked.

LaRoche doubled and singled in his first two at-bats, and he scored two runs and drove in another while making his first career start at shortstop.

Manager Bob Geren said that Matsui and Pennington would both be back in Wednesday and also Thursday, a day when the team faces another left-hander, Ricky Romero. Jackson will start in that lineup, and David DeJesus is likely to get a day off.

Oakland went 24-21 last season against left-handed starters, 57-60 against right-handers.

Despite the efforts of Jackson and LaRoche on Tuesday, the A's lost 7-6 at Toronto in 10 innings.
