Oakland's relievers have a 2.77 ERA overall, putting them among the top three in the league, and they've been especially good in the past two weeks, putting up a 1.56 ERA.
The unit will be even better, though, when Bailey, who made the All-Star team in each of his first two big-league seasons, returns, and that could happen in the next two or three weeks. Bailey told reporters Sunday that he will throw to hitters at least twice more this week.
After that, Bailey is likely to go on a rehab assignment of undetermined length.
Bailey is throwing fastballs only in his bullpen sessions but he's throwing curveballs during his flat-ground work. He said he's now focused on the quality of his stuff rather than thinking about how his arm feels.
"I kind of got over a hump in general," Bailey said after a bullpen session on Sunday.
