A's manager Bob Geren said during the spring that, with such a strong bench, he planned to use everyone and keep all of his regulars fresh.
Geren has followed through, particularly recently, when he often has two regulars out of the lineup on any given day. On Thursday, for example, leadoff man Coco Crisp and designated hitter Hideki Matsui did not start, while Ryan Sweeney played center field and Josh Willingham was the designated hitter.
Geren said that with a day game after a night game, he wanted to get Crisp a break because Crisp had some left quadriceps soreness last week.
Geren has used 25 lineups in the first 32 games, and the only lineup he has used more than once is his Opening Day lineup, which he has used seven times.
Geren said that LaRoche and projected starting third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff are likely to get roughly equal amounts of playing time in the near future, because he plans to have LaRoche fill in at shortstop and second base some soon.
Oakland's lineup produced only three runs on 11 hits on Thursday in losing the series finale to Cleveland in 12 innings.
