A's pitching staff plays musical chairs

Six pitchers came and went Friday, long before the A's lost 2-1 in their first interleague game of the season.

Two starters were put on the disabled list. One was optioned to Class AAA Sacramento. And three relievers were promoted from Sacramento to the A's.

But the offense was the same, accounting for five hits and a single run -- the result of a bases-loaded, double-play groundout by pitcher Trevor Cahill, who probably shouldn't have been swinging away in the first place.

As for the roster moves, Brandon McCarthy joined Tyson Ross on the DL. The Ross move wasn't a surprise after he lasted just seven pitches Thursday and walked off the mound with an oblique strain. But the McCarthy news wasn't expected.

He was shelved with a "stress reaction in his right scapula," another shoulder issue. It's the fourth time in recent years McCarthy went to the DL because of an injury of this sort.

Reliever Trystan Magnuson was optioned, and the three new relievers were Joey Devine, Jerry Blevins and Fautino De Los Santos, who has never pitched in the majors and joined the A's organization in the trade that sent Nick Swisher to the White Sox.
