Roster Report · A's pitching staff plays musical chairs · Notes, Quotes

--RHP Joey Devine, 25 months after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, was added to the A's bullpen, and he called it "awesome." He deserved it, having tossed 12 1/3 scoreless innings with Class AAA Sacramento, striking out 17 and walking one. His expectations? "Zero," he said. "Go have fun."

--LHP Josh Outman is a "candidate for sure" to join the A's rotation Monday or Tuesday in Anaheim. With RHPs Tyson Ross and Brandon McCarthy on the DL, the A's plan to call up two Class AAA Sacramento pitchers. As for Guillermo Moscoso, manager Bob Geren called him "another good candidate." Other pitchers (Travis Banwart and Graham Godfrey) would be possibilities if only because they have lower ERAs.

--2B Mark Ellis collected his 1,000th career hit with a second-inning single. He's the 13th player in Oakland franchise history to reach the 1,000 milestone. Ellis added hit No. 1,001 and had two of the A's five hits.

--LHP Brian Fuentes surrendered the deciding run in the ninth inning on 1B Aubrey Huff's single to right field. Fuentes is 1-5 on the season and has two losses in three days. Fuentes got into early trouble when giving up a single to Emmanuel Burriss. After a sacrifice bunt and intentional walk to Freddy Sanchez, Huff ended the game with a single.

--LHP Brett Anderson will pitch Saturday for the A's. His only other start against the Giants was June 14, 2009, when he gave up six runs and eight hits in four innings. Anderson will get to hit in the interleague game, but don't expect much. He's hitless in four big-league at-bats with three strikeouts.

BY THE NUMBERS
7 -- Times the A's used the DL this year. They used it 23 times last year, two shy of the team record set in 2008. They used the DL 94 times since 2007.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"Yeah, it was a situation where we were down by a run. He had the take sign on early (in the count). He did drive in the run, the only run of the game for us," -- Manager Bob Geren, on why he allowed pitcher Trevor Cahill to swing away with the bases loaded and no outs. Cahill grounded into a double play.
