--RHP Andrew Bailey came off the DL on Sunday after missing the first two months with a right forearm strain. Bailey will not go straight back into the closer role, but will work in some non-save situations first. Bailey is not yet ready to work in back-to-back games. He pitched a perfect seventh Sunday, getting three groundouts.
--LHP Brian Fuentes returned to the closer role Saturday night after briefly losing his grip on the spot to Grant Balfour for several days. Balfour never got a save situation. Fuentes on Saturday recorded his first save since May 8, but the team's two-time All-Star closer, Andrew Bailey, came off the DL on Sunday and he is likely to be moved back into the job in the next week or so.
--INF Steve Tolleson, who had a few stints with Oakland last year, was traded to the Padres for cash considerations Sunday. Tolleson, son of former big-leaguer Wayne Tolleson, clearly was not in the A's plans when he was designated for assignment during the offseason and among the early spring cuts. Tolleson, who can play second, third and shortstop, was batting .274 with five homers at Class AAA Sacramento. Scott Sizemore, acquired Friday, now will play third at Sacramento.
--LHP Josh Outman recorded his first victory since June 8, 2009, on Saturday night at the Coliseum. Outman, who was making his second start in place of injured right-hander Brandon McCarthy, missed most of 2009 and all of 2010 after Tommy John surgery. --RHP Joey Devine pitched a scoreless seventh Saturday and he has not allowed an earned run in his past 31 games, dating back to 2008. Devine, who missed 2009 and 2010 after Tommy John surgery, also has a career-high 14 2/3 innings scoreless streak.
BY THE NUMBERS
13 -- RBI in the first 54 games of the season by A's everyday first baseman Daric Barton, putting him on a pace for 38 RBI over the course of the season.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"We're really all just keeping Andrew's seat warm, anyway. So it doesn't matter who pitches the eighth, ninth, seventh. Whenever he gets back, he's probably the best man for the job... I don't know if he'll go right back in the role or not, but he'll definitely help the team either way." -- Oakland reliever Brian Fuentes, on the return of closer Andrew Bailey, in the wake of some bullpen controversy the previous week after Fuentes lost four consecutive games and was removed from the closer job briefly.
