Pirates report: Inside pitch

Neal Huntington's focus had been entirely on the future since taking over as general manager late in the 2007 season. However, his first trade of this offseason was more about the present.

The Pirates filled a hole at second base by acquiring Akinori Iwamura from Tampa Bay in exchange for right-handed reliever Jesse Chavez. The Pirates experimented with utility player Delwyn Young at second base during the final two months of last season after trading Freddy Sanchez to San Francisco on July 30 and determined Young is not an everyday player.

"Akinori is a good athlete with above-average speed and is a tough out with a solid career on-base percentage," Huntington said. "We feel he is a player who will really help us."

Iwamura, 30, was limited to 69 games last season, as he underwent surgery to repair torn knee ligaments. He hit .290 with one home run and 22 RBIs. His career on-base percentage is .354.

Iwamura was injured in May when Florida's Chris Coghlan slid into him while trying to break up a double play. Iwamura returned to action late in the season but admitted he was not completely healthy. However, the Pirates say they have no concerns about Iwamura's availability for the beginning of spring training.

Iwamura will make $4.85 million next season, then be eligible for salary arbitration after the 2010 and 2011 season. He played professionally for nine season in his native Japan before Tampa Bay signed him to a three-year, $7.7 million contract between the 2006-07 seasons after paying a $4.5 million posting fee to the Yakult Swallows, his Japanese team.

Huntington said the Pirates would at least consider singing Iwamura to a multiyear contract beyond 2009, and their new second baseman seems somewhat amenable despite coming to a franchise that has had 17 consecutive losing seasons, a major North American professional sports record.

After hearing from the folks who watch Pirate games with a smirk, here is a recap of the biggest smiles in 2009. After all we do like to cheer as fans right?

4/6 - Opening Day, down 4-3 in the 9th to St. Louis, Jack Wilson hits a 2 out 3 run double in the 9th of

OK.  There are a fw threads regarding free agents and the like on here, but I want to see what some possible line-ups will look like for next year with us knowing that Iwamura will be our starting 2nd baseman to start the season.  This knowledge has changed a lot of things for me as I had penciled in Andy LaRoche at 2B ...(more)

I am not trying to call anyone out by any means but I notice that a lot of the people who are negative towards the Pirates have Penguin avatars.  Remember when the Penguins were atrocious?  It wasn't long ago.  Pe ...(more)

Please excuse my laziness, but I posted some of this on another thread, but I wanted to put all of this together.

I just received my copy of Baseball America for the Nov 2-15 time frame.  They are the folks who selected Andrew McCutchen

I know I'll probably get killed for this and the likelihood of it happening is slim, but I've been thinking about this for the last few days.

The big question is could the 2010 Bucs surprise everyone and go worst to first like the 2008 Rays? Its probably a year too soon, but maybe its not so far fetched. Let's break down the 2008

As a long suffering fan, I don't absolutely hate the trade for Iwamura. I've already read some stories about why this is an unconventional move for the Pirates, trading a prospect for a veteran. Isn't that why they have been stockpiling prospects? As i look at the possible free agents at 2nd, there isn't anyone within a price range that cou ...(more)

The Yankees win!  The Yankees win!  The Yankees win!

I bet the people of New York and the Bronx sure feel proud that they were able buy another All-Star team to bring their city yet another World Series Championship.   Thus, further proving the ludicrous flaw in the MLB system.

Not sure what the Pirates plans are for sure, but what would be wrong with bringing in JJ Hardy. The Brewers seem to be willing to get rid of him and we have the two things they need the most. A pitcher in Zach Duke ...(more)

Our payroll is 25 million, the lowest in the majors by 10 million to the Marlins

Our metro area can be compared to St. Louis, Cleveland, Cincinnatti, and Kansas City.

St. Louis' payroll is 88 million.

Cleveland's payroll is 67 million.

Cincinnatti's payroll is 73 million.

Go get Nick Green, even.s hes older, he plays a decent short and will hit 270 easy, with some pop. the others are never going to do that next year Cedeno's always hurt and Bix, I'm not sure about his bat. We always were wasting money before Hunt took over on old vets, well this move makes sense to me. you give this guy the starting job now and you gonna get rewards later. anyway great grab on AKI, ...(more)

Does anyone have a Baseball America subscription? They just posted the draft recap and grades for the NL central this week for subscribers only. It would be great if someone would share some of that content. I, for one, would be really interested in their view of the SP ceilings we just added. I know Callis really didn't like the Tony Sanchez pick at the time, but they really liked the rest of ...(more)
