Pirates report: Inside pitch

Neal Huntington wanted to keep his options open. Literally.

That is why the Pirates general manager made the surprising move of designating right-hander Jeff Karstens for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Chris Jakubauskaus, who was claimed off waivers from Seattle. The determining factor was that Jakubauskaus has two minor league options left and Karstens is out of options, which means he would have had to clear waivers if the Pirates tried to send him to the minor leagues.

"It's a bit of a risk because we like Jeff," Huntington said. "This gives us more flexibility with our 40-man roster and makes it easier to send players between Pittsburgh and (Class AAA) Indianapolis."

Jakubauskas, 30, made his major league debut with the Mariners this past season and was 6-7 with a 5.32 ERA in 35 games, eight starts. He also pitched one scoreless inning in one relief appearance for Class AAA Tacoma.

Jakubauskas spent 4 1/2 seasons in independent leagues following his college career at Oklahoma before signing with the Mariners in 2007 and being assigned to Class AA West Tenn.

Karstens, 27, was 4-6 with a 5.42 ERA in 39 games, 13 starts, for the Pirates last season. He began the season in the rotation before being moved to the bullpen in early June.

A lot of information has been produced in the past few weeks on this Board.  It shows that the Pirates have made great strides in improving the overall depth of our minor league talent.  My buddy j put out a fantastic view of the Top 50 Prospects, and it may be possible to argue points of where certain prospects are on his list ...(more)

Well here's my best shot a top 50 for the organization, plus a few honorable mentions and the best of the Latin leagues. A few quick notes, first, this is a prospect list based as much as possible on MLB projection, not on minor league numbers. Second, Donnie Veal, ...(more)

I would consider these free agents upgrades over Pearce offensively at the 1st base position.  Some may come with too lofty a pricetag for Pittsburgh, some may not want to come at all, and the Buccos may even decide to pursue a corner outfielder (Get Ankiel please, although I would settle for Baldelli) and put Garrett ...(more)

Mlbtraderumors.com reports that the Pirates are interested in Justin Dushscherer.

Dushcherer is a high end low risk player which is good for the Pirates. He has the all star potential and could be a #1 starter for the Buccos.

I would love to see this happen.

The complete list of minor league FA's can be found on MLB.com. These are players with 6 years of minor league experience who are not on a MLB roster. Most of these guys are essentially free shots at finding a gem like Garrett Jones last year. I would think that the Bucs would be attractive to the top guys due to a lack of depth ...(more)

For everyone who wanted to bring Bay back including me could finally put it to rest today. Bay declines a offer of 4 years/$60 million from the Red Sox. Now I'm wondering if he has a team that he wants to play for or how much is it going to take for him to sign a contract. Honestly, 15 million a season is a very reasonable contract over 4 y ...(more)

NH made a couple of surprising moves yesterday to get the 40 man set for the Rule V draft coming up the week after next. This was his last chance to protect minor leaguers that have been in the system for 5 years if obtained from HS or Latin America or 4 years if from college. NH chose to add Ramon Aguero, a fireballer (go figure) who came out of nowhere in 2009, NH is probably still sti ...(more)

Is Garrett Jones the real deal?  He played 82 games in the majors this year with .293 BA, 21 HRs, a .567 SLG and zero errors in the OF and 1 at 1B.  Looking back at his AAA and AA numbers he's always shown some power.  At 28 years old how was he only a rookie this year?  When with the ...(more)

The AFL finished play yesterday and the clear highlight for the Buccos was Jose Tabata. Here are the final stats for the league -

Jose Tabata - 28g-120ab-21R-21RBI-10XBH-4SB-13K-1
0BB-.392AVG-.448OBP-.517SLG - You don't have to say much about a guy that hits .392, but a major encouraging sign was the 10XBH which wo
