--OF Xavier Paul was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers. The Pirates will employ him in a bench role once he arrives, Wednesday or Thursday. Paul, 26, has shown good tools in the minors, including a strong arm, but he batted .230 with one home run and 12 RBI in 55 games for Los Angeles the past three seasons. "We have some thoughts as to how we can help Xavier, but we want to allow him to settle into his new environment before we begin to make adjustments," GM Neal Huntington said.
--LHP Scott Olsen (hamstring) was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day to clear space for OF Xavier Paul. A player will need to come off the 25-man roster too. That likely will be either OF/1B John Bowker or 1B/3B Steve Pearce. Bowker is out of options, and Pearce has one left. Paul and Bowker both are left-handed bats, which could work against Bowker.
--RF Garrett Jones continued to look more comfortable at the plate in homering off San Francisco star Matt Cain in the second inning. He launched a fastball 410 feet to straightaway center for his fourth home run of the season, giving him a .310 average over the past nine games.
--RHP Ross Ohlendorf, still on schedule to return to the rotation by mid-May, threw for 120 feet Tuesday and will throw his first bullpen session Wednesday. After two more of those, he will make one or two starts on a minor league rehabilitation stint.
--RHP Jameson Taillon, the Pirates' No. 2 overall pick in the draft last summer, will make his professional debut Wednesday night with Class A West Virginia. Taillon, 19, had remained in extended spring training in Florida until the weather improved in the north. He will face Hagerstown, the team with C Bryce Harper, the player Washington chose ahead of him.
BY THE NUMBERS
1 -- Victory total in 11 games when the Pirates have scored three or fewer runs.
QUOTE TO NOTE
