The Padres have been keeping first-round draft pick Donavan Tate as inactive as possible this fall as he rehabs from sports hernia surgery.

Officially, Tate spent a month at the Padres spring training/rehab facility in Peoria, Ariz., on a rehab assignment. But Tate sees it differently.

"I'm on a do-nothing-assignment," Tate joked recently. "I think I'm here so that they know I'm resting and not doing anything.

"And they're probably right. Had I stayed home after the surgery, I don't know, I might have done something. I'm pretty active. I think the Padres knew that. I don't think I've ever done nothing for so long."

A center fielder who was the third overall pick in last June's amateur draft, Tate suffered the injury days after signing with the Padres on Aug. 17. He had surgery to repair a double tear around his pubic bone on Oct. 7.

"I'm stunned that this happened," Tate said. "I've never missed a game, never missed anything in high school."

Tate, 17, a center fielder, opted to sign a $3.5 million contract with the Padres rather than go to North Carolina on a football scholarship as an option quarterback. He was actually working out with the Tar Heels football team before signing just ahead of the August deadline.

"I was in great shape," he said. "I was looking forward to going from the Arizona Rookie League to the Instructional League. And then I'm watching. I'm not a very good watcher."

But Tate expects to be 100 percent come spring training.

"I was really excited, and then I got hurt," he said. "It's been very humbling, but I'll be healthy in the spring. I'm going to hit the ground running. I'm going to work harder than anyone expects."

I have been browsing around on the tubes lately and I have noticed a few rumors about how Mike Cameron would be a perfect fit for the Padres at a luxurious $7 million a year. Now, don't get me wrong I think Mike Cameron is a fine baseball player who would fit in the mold o ...(more)

Congratulations to Adrian Gonzalez on such a great year both at the plate and on the field with his gold glove.

But how can you not give the gold glove to Kevin Kouzmanoff.  Three errors the whole year at third base with a best ever .990 fielding

Does anybody realize that Adrian Gonzalez plays 81 games a year in Petco park and is a 40hr 100rbi, gold glove 1B that will make $5 mill next year and there is a option for another year. Oh yeah and he's from San Diego! Dumping him for prospects is stupid. If we can trade Headley and or Chris Young(who cannot stay on the field)&n ...(more)

I have heard from more than one media source the Padres are entertaining offers once again from the Red Sox for Adrian Gonzalez, and not just from Hacksaw on 1090.

If given the chance to get guys like Cla

I made this a post elsewhere, but thought it needed its own forum. Apologies if it seems familiar.

The Padres could fill a lot of holes by trading Adrian Gonzalez now.

Consider the options. Giving him an extension puts the Padres in another Jake

Hey guys. I'm going to be trying to update this thread as often as I can with anything I see or hear, and always my always great thought on the Padres. Let's try to keep this thing going all offseason.

It's official: Jed Hoyer is the Padres' new GM.  One of the league's younger front office leaders at age 35, Hoyer played a critical role in building the Red Sox championship team of 2007.  It was he, and not Theo Epstein, who engineered the trade that brought ...(more)

I am happy to be living in beautiful San Diego right now and this year have taken a greater interest in the Padres.  Growing up as a Yankee fan, I still like to follow teams that have to do what they do with limited resources, and whose fans don't freak out if the team doesn't win the World Series every year, but who are happy with a co ...(more)

Kevin Towers has built the '96 division winner, '98 pennant team and the back to back division winners in 2005 and 2006. He did all this on a very restricted bydget. I dont understand how you fire the best budget gm in baseball. No one knows this franchise better then KT. Look what he was able to do this year and get the pieces we needed. I would of liked to see KT stay and help build this team ba ...(more)

.......in a Nordstrom world was what Kevin Towers was asked to do each year by the Padres & I for one believe that there isn't a GM in baseball that could have do any better than K.T.

Being GM of the Padres was like asked Lance Armstrong to win the Tour de France with only one leg, Michael Phelps to win swimming gold med
