--RHP Mat Latos, who had been projected to be the Padres' Opening Day starter, will open the season on the disabled list because of bursitis in his right shoulder. Latos, 23, was having a troubled spring training even before the bursitis. He had a 9.00 ERA and had given up 16 hits in nine innings in addition to having three emotional incidents after his outings. But he is scheduled to throw this weekend in St. Louis and is eligible to return in time for the Padres' fifth game of the season April 7. "Whatever they think is best for me is fine," said Latos.
--1B Allan Dykstra, 23, the Padres' controversial first-round pick in the 2008 draft (23rd overall) has been traded to the New York Mets for RHP Eddie Kunz. A product of Rancho Bernardo High in the San Diego area, Dykstra was drafted by the Padres although other teams begged off because of hip problems. The Wake Forest product never advanced past Class A and hit .241 with 16 homers and 70 RBI with Lake Elsinore last year but struck out 122 times in 386 at-bats. Kunz, a supplemental first-round pick of the Mets in 2007, was 7-8 with a 5.34 ERA for the Mets' Double-A affiliate at Birmingham last season.
--INF Alberto Gonzalez was acquired from Washington in exchange for minor league RHP Erik Davis. Gonzalez, 27, becomes the Padres' utility infielder at short and second.
Gonzalez has a .253 average with a .292 on-base percentage in 592 career major league at-bats. "We got him because we love his glove and versatility," said Padres general manager Jed Hoyer. The Padres had released utility infield candidate Kevin Frandsen the previous day and wanted 24-year-old Everth Cabrera to start every day at Triple-A Tucson. Davis was 9-3 with a 3.82 ERA in 19 starts for Class A Lake Elsinore and 4-0 with a 2.75 ERA in seven starts for Double-A San Antonio last year.
--OF Cedric Hunter was recalled from the club's minor league camp to open the season on the 25-man roster because CF Cameron Maybin goes into the regular season nursing a sore thigh and his backup, Eric Patterson, opens the season on the disabled list with a hamstring strain. Hunter hit .465 with the Padres this spring.
