--Manager Bud Black was thrown out by plate umpire Angel Hernandez in the top of the fourth inning Wednesday. It was the first time Black was ejected this season, but the 12th time during his tenure as the Padres manager. "I know I can't argue balls and strikes, and I was," Black said. "Angel did what he had to do."

--LHP Joe Thatcher received a third cortisone injection in his strained left shoulder Wednesday after playing catch for a second straight day. The Padres will now wait three or four days to see how Thatcher feels before he resumes playing catch. "It felt better (Wednesday)," said Thatcher, who has been on the shelf since the second week of spring training.

--2B Orlando Hudson is the only Padre to teach base in all 11 of the team's games, and he is riding a nine-game hitting streak (.361, 13-for-36). He had a walk-off, two-out, bases-loaded single Wednesday. It was the fifth walk-off hit of his career.

--RHP Tim Stauffer has given up 23 hits and five walks in 15 innings over three starts this season. He allowed two runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings Wednesday, throwing 99 pitches.

--RHP Heath Bell picked up the win Wednesday after throwing a scoreless ninth inning. Bell's last three appearances have come in non-save situations.

BY THE NUMBERS
1-for-21 -- The Padres' mark with runners in scoring position in three games against Cincinnati before 2B Orlando Hudson's game-winning, two-out, bases-loaded single Wednesday.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"Tuesday night was one of the first times this season that I tried to do too much. That got me in trouble in college, the minors and my first years in the major leagues. I'm really trying to stay inside myself, trying to get past that." -- C Nick Hundley, on his .406 start with the bat (13-for-32 with two doubles, a triple, two homers and eight RBI).
