Mariners report: Inside pitch

The end of the World Series brought into sharp focus for the Mariners just how much free agency will affect the team this offseason.

Eight Mariners officially became free agents at the series' end. The list includes Miguel Batista, Erik Bedard, Russell Branyan, Jack Wilson, Adrian Beltre, Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Sweeney and Endy Chavez.

The Mariners have an option for the 2010 season on Wilson at $8.4 million with a $600,000 buyout going to Wilson if the Mariners don't pick up the option. The other seven all are unrestricted free agents. The Mariners haven't decided whether they will pick up Wilson's option, although the shortstop has said he'd like to return.

It appears that Beltre and Branyan will be heavily pursued by the Mariners, who are badly in need of keeping two of their more productive offensive players.

Bedard is coming off surgery for the second year running, and the Mariners will have to decide if they want to make another play for the talented but often-injured (four trips to the disabled list in the last two seasons) left-handed starter.

The veteran good humor provided by Griffey and Sweeney was key to the resurgent good vibes coming out of the Seattle clubhouse. Both players are thought to want to return to Seattle, but it's not clear if the Mariners can afford roster space for more than one. Griffey recently had knee surgery, and it's possible that if the surgery is successful he could improve upon his 2009 stats (.219, 19 homers, 57 RBIs).

Batista won't be back, and he's the only one among that group of whom that can be said. Chavez is still recovering from major knee surgery and won't be ready to play at the start of spring training. The Mariners liked the life he brought to the organization, and they might try to keep him even though he's looking at a mid-2010 return.

I was thinking about what it would take to trade felix away. If we cant sign him to an extension how many prospects , how many Mlb ready players im just interested in what you guys think it would take or what you would want in return. I personally would not want him trade i think we should sign him to a 6 year 110 mil deal but you can only offer so many years and money if he doesnt wanna sign ...(more)

I know most have read this already, but I thought it was worth bringing up. Where do the M's go from here? That makes Wilson more valuable, but I am just not sold on him. I know he was declared the best defensive SS this year, but I question that. I think he may be top 10, but the best?

Who is left to make a run at?

This is a thread just to share thoughts on how the offseason should go. Who we should look at? who we shoud get rid of? I belive we need to find a big bat with out giving up any big pieces of the puzzle. Like Felix i dont think he should be goin anywhere this off season. If we get rid of him i think we should atleast wait till next seasons trade deadline to max our profit on the deal. But i would l ...(more)

What do you guys think about Aroldis chapman. The Prediction of his contract is that he'll command around 40 to 60 million over 4 to 5 years and theres talk that the Mariners are serously considering him and forking over that much money to a unproven player like him. There was speculation on MLB Trade rumors.com that the only reason why seat ...(more)

Not to toot my own horn but I have been telling you guys that Kenji would have the ability to go back to Japan if he wanted to.  Well, today he opted out of the final two years of his contract freeing him to return to Japan only.  As I said before, I had a feeling there was a way that he could get back to Japan and that he would do it...walking away from the cash of this contract.  ...(more)

I know we all read about a 3 team trade at the deadline between M's-Boston-Padres that would have gotten us Gonzalez, but it sounds like we had a deal close to getting him w/o Boston being involved. This is per the Boston Globe.

Ok I will say it now Felix should win the Cy Young.

Im not taking anything away from Greinke he had a great year. He finished tops in era and K's. Felix had one more start but a better record. He won 19 games to Greinkes 16. He also lost more games than King Felix 8 games lost to 5. They are both awsome players and if the Royals w
