Mariners report: Inside pitch

The Mariners had a 13-player turnover from 2008 to 2009, all the better to get rid of the stain of a 101-loss season.

But after having won 85 games in 2009, there seems every possibility that the turnover from October to next spring might be every bit as severe.

The Mariners are certain to lose several of their free agents over the winter, a process that may start during the upcoming winter meetings.

The list of players who were with the Mariners in 2009 and are already gone is long -- left-hander Jarrod Washburn, shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, catcher Kenji Johjima, catcher Jeff Clement, outfielder Wladimir Balentien, right-hander Roy Corcoran and shortstop Ronny Cedeno.

Third baseman Adrian Beltre is almost certain to play elsewhere in 2010. Ditto for right-hander Miguel Batista. Left-hander Erik Bedard's return is iffy at best. The same can be said for outfielder Endy Chavez and first baseman/designated hitter Mike Sweeney.

The Mariners are pursuing first baseman Russell Branyan after he hit 31 home runs for Seattle last season, but it is unclear if the two sides will be able to agree on a contract.

This is a thread just to share thoughts on how the offseason should go. Who we should look at? who we shoud get rid of? I belive we need to find a big bat with out giving up any big pieces of the puzzle. Like Felix i dont think he should be goin anywhere this off season. If we get rid of him i think we should atleast wait till next seasons trade deadline to max our profit on the deal. But i would l ...(more)

I ran across this on SI's site and it was a good read. It took place back in 2000 when Griffey was traded and it talks about how the process went. It is pretty amazing hearing how two major execs could be such jerks at times.

The story is long, but entertaining.

Alright so I just got done reading some stuff and here is what i've picked up.

-Miguel Cabrera is on the trade market now and it is likely that the Mariners will be interested in him. My thoughts are his contract is huge but he is one of the best batters in baseball and is in his mid 20s.

-Jack Cust has been said t

According to Larry LaRue of The News Tribune Lopez will be staying put as the 2B for the Mariners. Teams lost interest in Lopez because of his lack of range and quickness in the field also because his OBP in 2009 has been less than ideal.

Some other news is that the Royal

Ok so the Mariners signed Griffey this year AGAIN for 4 million dollors. Are they out of their mind!! Look at what Griffey did last year: played about every OTHER game, Was hitting 200, didnt really contribte to the Mariners at all. The Mariners should have used that 4 million dollors to put on a good free agent like Jason Bay but no we dic ...(more)

I was thinking about what it would take to trade felix away. If we cant sign him to an extension how many prospects , how many Mlb ready players im just interested in what you guys think it would take or what you would want in return. I personally would not want him trade i think we should sign him to a 6 year 110 mil deal but you can only offer so many years and money if he doesnt wanna sign ...(more)

I don't know why I was on the Mets board but it was very interesting what I stumbled across, apparently we've offered $120 million to Bay (unknown number of years), not sure why they would make it up but here's the thread:

Hey all I was thinking while it was awsome for Felix to finish in the top 2 for the Cy Young it may have helped us.
How you ask. Simple had he won the Cy Young his price would have gone even higher.

Now we can do a 6 yr deal starting at 15-17 million a year with bonuses tied to wins and to him finishing in the Cy Young.

I believe that next year he could win it.

It wasn't exactly a pitching duel Tuesday in the Arizona Fall League, but Seattle Mariners fans can still smile over any four-hit day by up-and-coming outfielder Dustin Ackley.
