An MRI taken on the right knee of catcher Adam Moore contained some bad news for the Mariners on Thursday.

Moore suffered a torn meniscus while playing defense Wednesday in Texas, and he will need surgery.

The Mariners placed Moore on the 60-day disabled list Friday, though they didn't announce a timetable for his return.

To replace him on the roster, Seattle purchased the contract of Chris Gimenez from Class AAA Tacoma before Friday's home opener against the Indians. Gimenez will back up Miguel Olivo.

Gimenez wasn't on the 40-man roster, but moving Moore to the 60-day DL cleared a spot for him.

Gimenez saw brief action with the Cleveland Indians in each of the past two seasons, hitting a combined .160 in 73 games. He played both outfield corners and first base in addition to catcher with Cleveland.

Surgery for Moore has yet to be scheduled.
