--3B Chone Figgins (sore left wrist/thumb) missed a second consecutive start Wednesday, the only two games he's missed this season. He and manager Eric Wedge expect Figgins to be back in the lineup Thursday in Kansas City.
--LHP Jason Vargas left Wednesday's 8-3 loss to the Blue Jays with a 3-2 lead, but wound up getting no decision when the bullpen couldn't hold off Toronto. Vargas hasn't won a game since last Aug. 14. He's 0-8 in his last 11 games, and in his three no-decisions, he owns a 0.93 ERA.
--1B Justin Smoak went to the opposite field to hit his first home run of the season. But this one came with the Safeco Field roof closed. Smoak said after Wednesday's game that on the double he hit Monday night, "I felt I hit better."
--2B Adam Kennedy made his fifth start Wednesday. He leads the team with a .333 average, and he's even better than that in games he's started, batting .389.
--CF Franklin Gutierrez is expected to join Triple-A Tacoma to start an injury rehabilitation assignment Friday. The Mariners return home on Monday, and there's a chance Gutierrez will be activated then.
BY THE NUMBERS
12,407 -- That was Wednesday's attendance, making it the smallest crowd in Safeco Field history. It's the second time in three days the Mariners have set a negative attendance record.
QUOTE TO NOTE
