It happened again in the seventh inning Monday, when Detroit's Jhonny Peralta had the key blow in a six-run seventh inning that sent the Mariners to an 8-3 loss, Seattle's 12th defeat in 17 games.
Peralta's ball was hit well, but if Gutierrez had been in center field, there's a chance that he would have caught it and Peralta wouldn't have wound up with a three-run triple that buried Seattle.
But the man in center was Ryan Langerhans because Gutierrez is on the disabled list. And Langerhans didn't have the speed to get there.
The Mariners announced Monday that Gutierrez would leave Tuesday for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., to have further work done to determine just what is wrong with his stomach.
He battled stomach problems all last year, and he hasn't played in a game since March 19 because the issue has lingered.
