Notes, Quotes
--SS Brendan Ryan, who has batted in the bottom third of the order most of the season, was moved into No. 2 spot with 3B Chone Figgins demoted Monday for the first time this year. The move out of the blue to Ryan, who said, "To be honest, I didn't even know I was hitting second until you just told me." Ryan singled in the third inning to stretch his hitting streak to a career-best 10 games.
--3B Chone Figgins was told by manager Eric Wedge that he was being moved out of the No. 2 slot in the lineup before Monday's game. Figgins was disappointed, but realistic in the wake of a 2-for-36 slide that brought his average down to .193.
--RF Ichiro Suzuki had a meeting with manager Eric Wedge before Monday's game after a stretch in which he was a season-worst 1-for-24 as his average dropped to .272. Wedge said he wanted to make sure Ichiro wasn't pressing too much. Ichiro singled in his first two at-bats, starting a pair of two-run rallies.
--RHP Doug Fister got more than two runs of support Monday for only the third time this season. He was able to turn that into his third victory, in part because he struck out a career-best nine Baltimore Orioles. "He was efficient throughout," manager Eric Wedge said of letting Fister start the eighth inning, when the Orioles scored their last two runs.
--DH Jack Cust hit his first triple of the season and only the second of his career Monday, a towering fly ball off the wall in right-center field. His other triple came on Aug 18, 2007, when he was playing for Oakland against Kansas City.
--RHP Brandon League was a perfect 9-for-9 in saves the last time he faced the Baltimore Orioles on May 10. He blew his first save that day, then another two days later. He didn't get to face the Orioles again until Monday, when he threw a scoreless ninth in a 4-3 win to earn his 14th save.
--LHP Aaron Laffey is generally used in long relief, so it was something of a surprise that manager Eric Wedge went to Laffey in a left-on-left match-up against Baltimore's Luke Scott in the eighth inning of a one-run game Monday. Laffey induced an inning-ending grounder to get his second hold of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS
