Even though they lost RHP Matt Morris to San Francisco, the Cardinals' rotation is six deep with the signing of RHP Sidney Ponson, turned loose by Baltimore, and the expected emergence of RHP Anthony Reyes. With the additions on Dec. 23 of RF Juan Encarnacion and 2B Junior Spivey, the starting lineup appears relatively set: SS David Eckstein, CF Jim Edmonds, 1B Albert Pujols, 3B Scott Rolen, RF Encarcacion, LF Larry Bigbie, C Yadier Molina and Spivey or Hector Luna at 2B.

ARRIVALS
RHP Sidney Ponson (free agent from Baltimore), 2B Junior Spivey (free agent from Washington), RF Juan Encarnacion (free agent from Florida), Braden Looper (free agent from New York Mets), 2B Aaron Miles (traded from Colorado), OF Larry Bigbie (traded from Colorado), LHP Ricardo Rincon (free agent from Oakland), C Gary Bennett (free agent from Washington), SS Deivi Cruz (free agent from San Francisco), RHP Juan Mateo (Rule 5 draft from Chicago Cubs), RHP Dennis Tankersley (minor league free agent from Kansas City), 1B/OF Brian Daubach (minor league free agent from New York Mets), RHP John Riedling (minor league free agent from Florida), RHP Jeff Nelson (minor league free agent from Seattle).

DEPARTURES
3B Abraham Nunez (free agent, signed with Philadelphia), RHP Cal Eldred (retired), RF Larry Walker (retired), RHP Matt Morris (free agent, signed with San Francisco), LHP Ray King (traded to Colorado), OF-INF John Mabry (free agent, signed with Chicago Cubs), 2B Mark Grudzielanek (free agent, signed with Kansas City), C Einar Diaz (free agent, signed with Cleveland), OF Reggie Sanders (free agent, signed with Kansas City).

BIGGEST NEEDS
The Cardinals still would like to find one more left-hander for the bullpen.

FREE AGENTS
RHP Al Reyes, OF Larry Walker (announced retirement).

C Mike Mahoney, RHP Mike Lincoln and INFs Scott Seabol and Bo Hart all were not tendered contracts.

ARBITRATION ELIGIBLE
None.

IN LIMBO
No one now that RHP Jason Marquis has signed.

MEDICAL WATCH
LHP Randy Flores (left elbow surgery) will be out six eight to weeks but should be ready for spring training. 3B Scott Rolen is rehabilitating after a second shoulder surgery and should be ready for spring training. RHP Al Reyes, who probably will be re-signed as a free agent even though he isn't able to pitch, might be back by August after offseason Tommy John surgery.

Eighty-nine years ago today, Stanislaw Francizek Musial was born in Donora, a small mining town in western Pennsylvania. His father Lukasz, a Polish immigrant, almost immediately began to call the boy "Stashu." Later, after the young Musial had grown up to become one of the greatest baseball hitters who ever lived, he'd be known by another nickname in every ballpark in America: "The Man." When he ...(more)

Some news this morning out of St.Louis, if the price tag for Matt Holliday proves to be to much, the team will pursue pitching over another big hitter...here's some of what Mo has to say...Free agency is not the only option available as Mozeliak concedes the club may also pursue trade options. The Cardinals heavily scouted the Washington ...(more)

If they are going anywhere.  Any thoughts on availability inside or outside the organization of a good lefty?

Well this thread is being created on Tuesday, so we're still 2 days away from the winner actually being decided for the National League. Over in the American League, Zack Greinke was just selected the winner with a 16-8 record and a 2.16 ERA for the Royals.

The Cardinals today promoted eight minor-league players to their major-league roster, thus making them off limits for selection in next month’s Major League Draft.

you know your team is slow when Albert Pujols leads your team with 16 steals.  Now that the PED era is moving behind us, teams are starting to steal bases again.  The Cardinals need to upgrade their team speed to compete in my opinion.  What ar ...(more)

Believe it or not, this was actually an Assignment for a class I am taking right now (one of the better college classes I chose to take where we got to choose the topic to write about), and since Cards_68 gave such a strong push for Figgins, he got me on the bandwagon.  Anyways, this following part is just a copy and pasting of my assignment.  Oh, and at the very end, my quest ...(more)

The normal Round Two question for the pundits this week was: who is in left field if Holliday leaves?

I found this question intriguing because it has such an impact on the Cards next year.  I just feel that Holliday might just be pushing himself out of budget range of the Cardinals, which will lead to other options.

La Russa is as arrogant as it comes, either dealing with his own DUI or Ankiel, or his beloved Big Mac. There is no doubt in any reasonable person's mind that Big Mac led the way in destroying the legitimate HR records. Sosa, Bonds, AROD, and yes Big Sloppy Ortiz. They all cheated and knew it!

I wish they would just go ahead and give Pujols his MVP award...of course now I'm worried that Hanley Ramirez might end up with it....
Stupid Lincecum.  I don't see how Albert doesn't get his 3rd?  4th?  Should be 7th.....

What kind of contract do you think it will take to resign Matt Holliday? How many years do you think he is looking for and how much per year? Is 5 year 100 million going to do it and will the Cardinals pay it? I could be wrong but I think this will be the neighborhood Holl ...(more)

Albert Pujols has made it very clear he wants to play for a winner.  Well no one is more key to this than him.  The Cardinals have a good balance of young talent and very good vetran players right now, they just need a few minor pieces to pull things together ...(more)
