Rays report: Inside pitch

The Rays had already decided they had good enough alternatives at second base that they weren't going to pick up the $4.85 million option to keep Akinori Iwamura.

But that didn't make saying goodbye any easier.

"It's tough to put into words what Aki's meant to this organization," executive VP Andrew Friedman said. "I like cite this example a lot when talking about the (organization's) transformation from '07 to '08, how selfless Aki was when we sat him down at the end of '07 and talked to him about moving to second base.

"And essentially his comment was, 'Whatever it takes to help the team win.' And I think all of his teammates saw that and really respected that, as did the organization. So that's just one anecdote. But he's meant a lot to this organization both on and off the field."

Iwamura, 30, was a key player for the Rays for three seasons, hitting .281 with a .354 on-base percentage and filling the leadoff role. But with Ben Zobrist, Sean Rodriguez and Reid Brignac all available to play second and Evan Longoria entrenched at third, they no longer had use for him.

The Rays are still discussing different scenarios, but one they are talking a lot about is platooning Zobrist, who would also get time in right field, with Rodriguez, who was acquired from the Angels in the Scott Kazmir trade.

Rays exercise Crawford's option for 2010

The Tampa Bay Rays today exercised their $10 million option for the 2010 season on left fielder Carl Crawford.

Crawford, 28, is the longest-tenured Ray in history and

The Rays had a good run this year.  Started slow, went well in the middle, ended bad, but they were in it until the beginning of September.

Next year they need to do a couple things that won't cost them money:

Lineup:
2b  Aki
LF CC
SS Bartlett
3b Longoria
DH Zobrist
1b Pena

I knew that there wasn't much of a chance he would be on the team next season with the emergence of Zobrist and Joyce most likely getting the starting job in RF, but it still sucks.

Why did it have to be the Pirates?  The armpit of the MLB.

With an increase of 3.5 percent from 2008, the Rays' total attendance of 1,874,962 was nearly 20 percent shy of their goal of the major-league average, and team president Matt Silverman said the shortfall is likely to impact their payroll in future seasons. "It's an important data point for us," Silverman said. &qu ...(more)

'Til next season. What a great season it has been. Up and Down, Highs and Lows.

The late start in April and bombing out mid-August on the west coast. But overrall it has been a blast and I will really miss watching these guys.

Todays game is not the way I would have liked the last season to end. But, oh well that's the way it goes and it has been great.

What is the latest on this guy.  I have one day to stash him on my large dynasty roster, worth it?  Has he been looking good coming back from TJ surgery???

I don't care about his numbers, I just care about how he's looked after each start and his movement/location.

A little misleading but that is what was laid out on the radio yesterday.  The Rays GM ( I think that is who was talking, it might have been one of the owners as well, not sure) basically said how dissappointed he was in the attendance Monday night.

The fact is, attendance is up quite a bit over last year and double what it w

I'm sick of Andrew Freidman and Sternberg crying and complaining about the attendance. They say how this team is winning now, yet fans don't come. The BS they've pulled at the last two deadlines making ZERO moves, and now trading Kazmir, who's finally turning it around for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. They got a pencil and a paper towel. That's about it.

This move once again shows the orga

No seriously, Why???

He's been getting his act together...he's still a young ace with AMAZING potential...Why???

What was the Rays' training staff THINKING letting Carlos Pena finish his At-Bat today with a hand injury that (we now know) will require season-ending surgery?!

Poorly produced by them.

I really thought the Rays would be in first by now, even after their slow start.  Oh well.  They need to take 2/3 from the Angels after blowing the overall series in Seattle.  Boston is trying like hell to hand them (or Texas) the wildcard.

At this point, the
