Manager Joe Maddon is often criticized by Rays fans for his constant tinkering with the lineup.
It's something he has to do, given the Rays combination of players who tend to have somewhat limited skill sets (for example, good against right-handers but not lefties) and their reliance on sophisticated stats and matchup data, and something he often explains, but that doesn't quell the criticism.
But Friday, speaking to a Tampa Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Maddon threw the issue open for discussion, taking suggestions from the crowd to formulate his plan right on the spot.
The one suggestion he didn't necessarily agree with, but agreed to, was using right fielder Matt Joyce in the three-hole. But after Joyce responded with three hits in the 5-2 victory, Maddon gave credit where credit was due.
"Thank you Tampa Chamber," he said, then joking that he might have to go out looking for a breakfast meeting of some sort on Saturday before coming in for the Rays' 4:10 p.m. game.
