Sizzling Upton burns Blue Jays · Notes, Quotes · Roster Report

--3B Evan Longoria, who had been sidelined since April 2 with a strained left oblique muscle, was activated from the disabled list. He went 1-for-4 and made a strong defensive play, going behind third to snag a ball and throwing out the runner. Longoria said he felt fine and overcame any hesitancy to take a full cut during his four-game rehab assignment at Class AA Montgomery.

--INF Felipe Lopez was designated for assignment to make room for 3B Evan Longoria, who came off the disabled list. Manager Joe Maddon said he hoped Lopez would stay in the organization, with the Rays expecting him to accept an outright assignment to Class AAA Durham if he clears waivers. Maddon also said he wanted it to be known that Lopez's two incidents of lack of hustling to first base, the second leading to a one-day benching, had "nothing to do" with the decision.

--RHP Brandon Gomes made an impressive big-league debut, working two hitless, scoreless innings. Gomes, 26, was called up from Class AAA Durham somewhat unexpectedly. "I love his attitude, in a positive way," manager Joe Maddon said. "He was not affected. He looked the same tonight as I saw during camp."

--LHP David Price and RHP James Shields were each moved up a day in the rotation, a change designed to keep them on a more normal schedule and limit rookie RHP Jeremy Hellickson's innings by pushing him back. Price will now work the Thursday series finale against the Blue Jays, and Shields will pitch the opener of the weekend series in Baltimore. Hellickson will pitch Saturday.

--RHP Wade Davis logged his fifth consecutive quality start, but it wasn't pretty. He threw a season-high 112 pitches while working a season-low-matching six innings. The problem was a lack of command of his fastball and a reluctance to use his slider until the later innings.

BY THE NUMBERS
4 -- Walk-off wins for the Rays in their first 29 games.

QUOTE TO NOTE
