The Rays are down to their third-string shortstop for the next couple days.
Elliot Johnson sustained a sprain to the capsule in his left knee on an awkward slide during Monday's 6-3 loss to the Tigers. He is expected to be sidelined at least a few days.
Johnson told the St. Petersburg Times that an MRI didn't show any tears or structural damage. However, there is a sprain, and he said, "Walking on it right now is a chore, and bending it is the problem. They told me I'll probably be off of it for the next few days for sure, and after that I don't really know."
The Rays are already without Reid Brignac, who left the team after Saturday's game due to the death of his grandfather. Brignac isn't expected back until Friday. He is on the bereavement list, and the Rays called up Felipe Lopez to take his spot.
Sean Rodriguez took over at shortstop after Johnson's exit. Rodriguez played shortstop in the minors, but he has limited experience at the position in the majors.
