Blue Jays report: Inside pitch

Inside pitch · Roster · Notes, quotes

Right-hander Jeremy Accardo was the savior for the Jays last year when he filled in for the injured B.J. Ryan and recorded 35 saves.

This year, Accardo has been mostly missing in action as he has been on the disabled list with a forearm injury since May 9.

Recovery from his problem has been slow and frustrating for the reliever, who Friday was with his teammates in Anaheim after flying to Los Angeles to be checked out by surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum.

"I'm here just to try to get some peace of mind, to hear him tell me it's not the ligament and that I can just start letting it go," Accardo said. "I'm just a little timid, a little shy to really release it.

"It's just that mindset I'm looking for where you can let it go without being afraid of something happening."

A few weeks back, Accardo was in a rehab stint with Class A Dunedin when he had a setback during a game. Since then it's been weight training and side sessions.

"I probably rushed things a little bit," he said. "You get so eager to be back."

Before his injury, Accardo was not the same pitcher that he was in 2007. In 16 appearances he was 0-3 with a 6.57 ERA. He had lost a little life on his fastball and had no control with his split-finger fastball.

Now he's waiting for optimistic news from Dr. Yocum and after that a slow recovery process.

ANGELS 8, BLUE JAYS 2: RHP A.J. Burnett didn't do much to impress any suitors Friday night as he allowed eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits over seven innings to take the loss and even his record at 8-8. Burnett is said to be on the trade block. Angels RHP Jered Weaver blanked the Jays over the opening seven innings before giving up two runs in the eighth on an RBI triple by 2B Joe Inglett and RBI single by RF Alex Rios. The Jays lost their third consecutive game.
