Blue Jays report: Roster

Roster · Inside pitch · Notes, quotes

The Jays began the offseason with plenty of change. Paul Beeston removed "interim" from his title to become team president and CEO. General manager J.P. Ricciardi was replaced by his former assistant, Alex Anthopoulos, 32. As far as the roster goes, the biggest decision will revolve around star RHP Roy Halladay and whether to keep him for the 2010 season or trade him in the offseason for much needed talent.

BIGGEST NEEDS: The Jays have to figure out what they will do with RHP Roy Halladay -- keep him or trade him. They also might have to scramble to fill the holes at shortstop and catcher if free agents Marco Scutaro and Rod Barajas sign elsewhere. They do not have ready replacements in their system for either player.

ARRIVALS: LHP Sean Henn (waiver claim from Orioles), INF Jarrett Hoffpauir (waiver claim from Cardinals).

FREE AGENTS: SS Marco Scutaro, C Rod Barajas, SS John McDonald, DH/INF Kevin Millar.

The Jays would like to bring back Scutaro and will try and re-sign him. They will probably not pursue Barajas because they think that J.P. Arencibia may be ready to be promoted next season following the All-Star break. They might be willing to go with backup Raul Chavez and a cheaper alternative than Barajas.

ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE: RHP Jason Frasor, RHP Jeremy Accardo, C Raul Chavez, RHP Casey Janssen, RHP Brandon League, LHP Brian Tallet.

Jason Frasor is the most valuable asset on the list and could be the Jays' closer in 2010, having taken on the role after LHP B.J. Ryan was released. They have interest in bringing back the others with perhaps lukewarm interest in Jeremy Accardo, a reliever who spent most of the season at Triple-A Las Vegas. They have zero interest in Millar.

IN LIMBO: With the exception of 2B Aaron Hill and LF/DH Adam Lind, the rest of the players on the Jays' roster can all be had for the right package, including RHP Roy Halladay. Although they'd like more production out of 1B Lyle Overbay, they can live with his $7 million salary for 2010, the final year of his contract.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Jesse Litsch (Tommy John elbow surgery in June 2009) will be at spring training but is not expected to be ready by the start of the 2010 season.

RHP Shaun Marcum (Tommy John elbow surgery in September 2008) will be at spring training and could be ready at the beginning of the 2010 season.

RHP Dustin McGowan (right shoulder surgery in July 2008, right knee surgery in July 2009) will be at spring training but is not expected to be ready by the start of the 2010 season.

RHP Rob Ray (right shoulder strain) will be at spring training and could be ready by the start of the 2010 season.

CF Vernon Wells (cartilage damage in left wrist) was scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery in early November. He is expected to be fully recovered before spring training.

3B Edwin Encarnacion (left wrist surgery in October 2009) is expected to be ready for spring training.

looking forward to a new year and maybe it won't be a successful year as far as wins are concerned but i do think if we can develope out pitchers and i our two young hitters then we can go in another type of direction and even stop worrying about Vernon Wells so much..
if we can develope

Willy Taveras was just released by the Athletics. His contract was bought out by Oakland, so he could be had at the minimum. I know he has struggled with performance and injuries the past couple of years, but he is good defensively and can steal 50+ bases (stole 68 just two years ago). He might be worth the sign for the ...(more)

We have now entered the post Roy Halladay era. And as sad as I was to see him go, is as excited to see what these young guys get a chance to play. I'm particularly excited to see what Brett Cecil and mark rzepckynski will do over a full season. There is There a ...(more)

If we were to contend in a few years... here is somethings I would want to happen.
This is assuming all current players continue at their current level (Lind + Hill) or develop to 25 HR guys (Wallace + Snider). I think next season they should try to sign an ace and the following season they go after the big bat. This would probably add 40-45mil to the payroll not including regular salary incr

JAY'S CAN'T WIN FOR LOSIN'

If you're on a diet and you lose, you win.  But when it comes to major league baseball and most other pursuits, when you lose, you don't win.  Pretty obvious.

I've been following the Jays for 25 years.  During that time, the Jays haven't lost over 100 games in any single season.  However, in 2010 that's all going to change.

First I hope they can get an overpay deal done to seattle. That would create some questions for who will play 1B.... not sure if Wallace would be ready so maybe ruiz.... not sure if I would move Lind to 1B if we plan on Wallace being there soon....

I think the Jays should consider signing a decent, affordable 1-2 starting pitchers for next year. We need some guys to take some of the Hal

Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports that the Blue Jays have "talked to" the agent for unsigned outfielder Johnny Damon.
As Bastian notes, the Jays have a need for a leadoff-type hitter and Damon could potentially fill that role. Of course, they're probably waiting

There have been rumors of Frasor going to the Cubs but how about this. The Cubs are built to win now so could this happen.

Vitters(3B) and Lee(SS) for Downs, Frasor, Richmond(or other young starter), and maybe a low level prospect.

As the title says im not actually a Jays fan. I am however trying to better learn other teams systems so i decided i would try and rank their prospects. I need to know what i got right and what i got wrong in regards to my top 10 list. I figure its best to ask Jays fans since they know their system better then me.

Heres the link Thanks

I am surprised that there hasn't been more made of the money that we gave the Phillies in the Halladay trade.

What, we can't compete with the Yankees and Red Sox monitarily, so we're going to help the Phillies do so
