Blue Jays report: Roster

The Blue Jays desperately need to shore up their pitching staff. They were unsuccessful in their attempt to re-sign free agent LHP Ted Lilly. They filled a big hole at DH by signing veteran Frank Thomas to a two-year deal.

ARRIVALS: DH Frank Thomas (free agent from A's), SS Royce Clayton (free agent from Reds), OF Matt Stairs (free agent from Tigers), INF Jason Smith (Rule 5 acquisition from Cubs), RHP Geremi Gonzalez (minor league free agent from Brewers).

DEPARTURES: OF Frank Catalanotto (free agent, signed with Rangers), RHP Justin Speier (free agent, signed with Angels), C Bengie Molina (free agent, signed with Giants), LHP Ted Lilly (free agent, signed with Cubs).

BIGGEST NEEDS: One or two more middle-of-the rotation starters who can take some of the load off youngsters such as LHP Gustavo Chacin and RHP Shaun Marcum.

FREE AGENTS: All of the Jays' free agents have been spoken for. The team re-signed C Gregg Zaun to a two-year, $7.2 million deal. Speier signed with the Angels, Lilly signed with the Cubs, Catalanotto signed with the Rangers and Molina went to the Giants.

ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE: 1B Lyle Overbay, OF Reed Johnson, OF Alex Rios, LHP Scott Downs, RHP Jason Frasor.

IN LIMBO: No one at this time.

PROSPECT WATCH: The Jays saw enough of OF Adam Lind this September that they know he can help them offensively next year if they have a spot for him. Lind hit .357 with a slugging percentage of .554 in the month. The problem is finding a position for him. Lind hit .319 at Double-A New Hampshire this season with a team high 19 homers and 71 RBIs.

Also expected to make a push for a bigger role next year is former first-round pick (33rd in 2000) Dustin McGowan. The right-hander headed to the Arizona Fall League and with a very good spring training could push his way into the rotation next season depending on what J.P. Ricciardi is able to bring into the system.

The third prospect to watch is C Curtis Thigpen, a second-round pick in 2004. Thigpen made progress this season while catching for the bulk of the year at Triple-A Syracuse.

MEDICAL WATCH:

OF Reed Johnson has a suspected stress fracture in his lower right leg but should be OK by spring training.

First trade Doc: a) to the Phillies for Drabek, Happ, Brown, and 2 lower level prospect and the Jays pay most of Halladay's salary for this year. We get the prospects we need and they get the best pitcher in the league and not have to pay him much. I'd be accepting to a trade to the ...(more)

As another year winds down with the Jays finishing 4th in the division again, I thought I would share my thoughts on the state of our team.  I was at the Halladay / Burnett game this past season, and saw first hand how supportive and boisterous Blue Jays fans can still be, and it was great to be a part of that.  Having said that, ...(more)

With the off season among us, yes i know my Phillies only lost 2 days ago but the easiest way to get over it is to think about next year, well heres my question.  I know Roy Halladay is the face of the jays but what do you think is going to happen to him over the off s ...(more)

Lots has been said of stud pitcher Doc Halladay's imminent departure (most likely to the Phillies),but , as a long-time Jays fan, I believe the team is in better shape than the masses believe. There is some high end talent at important positions like Adam Lind and ...(more)

First off do not shot the messenger these are just rumours I have heard/read over the past few weeks

The Wells for Bradley deal everyone has heard, but the 43 million that would have to be sent with Wells makes this deal not a good idea for the Jays...WHY let me break it down with just numbers dollar numbers.          ...(more)

Okay, that ugly Blue Jays season is behind us now, and we're enjoying some nice playoff baseball.

Let's look to next spring then.  You know, where everyone thinks everyone can make the playoffs. (Unless you're the Pirates........ahhh, what the heck?  The Pirate

(POLL) I have read alot of articles and most people think cito should be fired, what do you guys think?

He has taken alot of heat for giving millar playing time.... i don't get why this is bad... i am not defending millar but does anybody think overbay is good? 15 HR at 1B does not cut it for me..... i would rather the Jays have a promotional night everygame where one lucky fan gets to play 1B

This is more a far-off idea... But let's say, that the Boston Red Sox do aquire Adrian Gonzalez. This make David Ortiz possibly available, and he may be pricey at $13 Million a year, but I thnik he is ...(more)

I think I asked a question like this before but I don't remember.....

If the Jays put Wells on waivers..... and a team was dumb enough to claim him.... (maybe he gets hot for a day or 2 and then put him on waivers).... and the jays let him go for nothing like rios.... can Wells exercise his no-trade clause and refuse to go to that team? or does waiver claim not count as a trade
