--RHP Luis Ayala was traded to the Mets for a player to be named, expected to be INF Anderson Hernandez. Ayala was one of the most reliable setup men in the National League for four seasons but was among the worst relievers in baseball this season, going 1-8 with a 5.77 ERA in 62 appearances. Ayala, who had "Tommy John" surgery in 2006, insists his arm is healthy, and his velocity has remained in the low-to-mid 90s. But he said a series of off-field issues, including a divorce, kept him from maintaining his focus this season. "When you don't have the really focus on your job, you can't do a good job, you know?" the Mexican native said. "It's not like an excuse, but if you don't feel comfortable, something happens to where you can't do your job. I tried to do my best." Hernandez, 25, was hitting just .203 for the Mets' Class AAA affiliate in New Orleans, but will likely join the Nationals' roster Wednesday in Philadelphia and serve as a backup infielder.

--RHP Marco Estrada is expected to be promoted from Class AAA Columbus (Ohio) and join the Nationals' bullpen Tuesday in Philadelphia. Estrada, 25, is 3-3 with a 3.58 ERA in 12 starts at Columbus, but will make his big-league debut as a reliever.

--C Jesus Flores was out of the lineup Sunday with a strained right calf. Flores hurt himself sliding into the plate during Saturday night's loss to the Rockies. X-rays came back negative, and Flores' status is day-to-day. C Wil Nieves will start in his place until he returns.

--3B Ryan Zimmerman was given a rare day off Sunday, though the Nationals' star third baseman did wind up appearing against the Rockies. Zimmerman, who missed 48 games with a left shoulder injury earlier this season, wasn't in manager Manny Acta's lineup for the series finale against Colorado. But with the Nationals trailing 3-2 in the sixth with two men on, Acta used Zimmerman to pinch-hit. He flied out to left, and Washington failed to score in the inning.

--OF Lastings Milledge continues to perform well for the Nationals even when his team is struggling. Milledge has hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games, going 26-for-71 (.366) with five homers, 11 RBIs and nine extra-base hits. His season average is up to .261.

BY THE NUMBERS
3 -- Remaining Nationals who played in the majors for the Montreal Expos (Chad Cordero, Nick Johnson, Shawn Hill).

QUOTE TO NOTE
"We tried to value the player properly, and we tried to negotiate a contract to sign the player. But that being said, we're not going to be bullied into just giving a number just because someone says, 'You've got to pay X.'" -- GM Jim Bowden, on failed negotiations with first-round draft pick Aaron Crow, a RHP out of the University of Missouri.

i dont know if the Nationals really want to bring in a pitcher, or if a pitcher really even wants to play for them, but they should target these 2 guys.

ben sheets- a lot of teams are sure to be scared off because of his injuries, but he is an effective pitcher. i think the nationals could get him at a reasonable price. hes a t

(POLL) As an angry Met fan, I am having a disagreement with one of my friends, and a local radio station. I believe the Nationals have a brighter future than the Mets. The Nats have Strasburg, Adam Dunn, ...(more)

I don't follow baseball, but did see that you lost to the Dodgers tonight.  Will the Nationals be a World Series contender next year?

***Mark McGwire's Five-Step Approach To Hitting***

Bryce Harper with the #1 pick?  Do you think they will be able to afford the contract he would want?   I know both of our team's are very pathetic right now, but hey...we have to get excited about something right?   I'm not sure about the Nationals, but the Pirat ...(more)

Seriously no fans deserve a team where ownership just doesn't care about the franchise. "Developing our own players" is a garbage excuse considering there isn't much young talent on the team or in the farm system. Look at this team. Mid-July and not even THIRTY wins yet, something most teams have accomplished by early June. Yes I know the Yanke ...(more)

This is from a Cub fan, your team can sure hit the ball. With the pitching that should come along for your team, I see your team passing the Mets. They are on a downturn with all the injurys, front office and Mgr. problems they will not be a bother to anyone next season. Mr. Dukes, your right fielder is one big fuse waiting to go off though ...(more)

The Nats seem to be determined not to get the first pick in the draft next year.   A once seemingly insurmountable lead has fallen steadily during August.  The Nats have gone 13-10 and KC has closed the gap to a mere 3.5 games by going 6-17.   With only 39 games to go, can the Nats really waste this bad a season by ...(more)

Hey Nats fans! I have been watching the Nats for a little more than a year now. I am a life long Dodgers fan. I like the Nationals and think they do have some hidden young talent. Looking at this team comparing it to others it seems the players have little stability and therefore not ...(more)

The Nats cannot be serious here. Rizzo has done nothing but good for this franchise and helping to change the culture of losing that is associated with the team. I'm sure Dipoto is a nice guy but look at what Rizzo created in Arizona and how that organization has fallen somewhat since his departure. Not a Nats fan here, but I do want to see them suceed and I am just confused by what I perceive ...(more)

Man, that Rob Dibble and his mouth.  Today the Nats Manager tried a squeeze play and the batter, via natural reaction, ducked because the ball came in right at his head!  Dibble made the comment that the batter should have done anything including let the ball hit him to protect the runner.  Dibble keeps on making comments about hitting.  What in the world does he know ...(more)

ok so how long until this team goes under and has to move again? i mean come on! who builds a brand new ballpark in SE DC? haha. did they seriously have plans that the ballpark would clean up that part of town? in theory it might work but not for another 15 years. if they were smart the park would have been built in northern va close to dullus airport, then they might sell more then 15 tickets per ...(more)
