--RHP Luis Ayala was traded to the Mets for a player to be named, expected to be INF Anderson Hernandez. Ayala was one of the most reliable setup men in the National League for four seasons but was among the worst relievers in baseball this season, going 1-8 with a 5.77 ERA in 62 appearances. Ayala, who had "Tommy John" surgery in 2006, insists his arm is healthy, and his velocity has remained in the low-to-mid 90s. But he said a series of off-field issues, including a divorce, kept him from maintaining his focus this season. "When you don't have the really focus on your job, you can't do a good job, you know?" the Mexican native said. "It's not like an excuse, but if you don't feel comfortable, something happens to where you can't do your job. I tried to do my best." Hernandez, 25, was hitting just .203 for the Mets' Class AAA affiliate in New Orleans, but will likely join the Nationals' roster Wednesday in Philadelphia and serve as a backup infielder.

--RHP Marco Estrada is expected to be promoted from Class AAA Columbus (Ohio) and join the Nationals' bullpen Tuesday in Philadelphia. Estrada, 25, is 3-3 with a 3.58 ERA in 12 starts at Columbus, but will make his big-league debut as a reliever.

--C Jesus Flores was out of the lineup Sunday with a strained right calf. Flores hurt himself sliding into the plate during Saturday night's loss to the Rockies. X-rays came back negative, and Flores' status is day-to-day. C Wil Nieves will start in his place until he returns.

--3B Ryan Zimmerman was given a rare day off Sunday, though the Nationals' star third baseman did wind up appearing against the Rockies. Zimmerman, who missed 48 games with a left shoulder injury earlier this season, wasn't in manager Manny Acta's lineup for the series finale against Colorado. But with the Nationals trailing 3-2 in the sixth with two men on, Acta used Zimmerman to pinch-hit. He flied out to left, and Washington failed to score in the inning.

--OF Lastings Milledge continues to perform well for the Nationals even when his team is struggling. Milledge has hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games, going 26-for-71 (.366) with five homers, 11 RBIs and nine extra-base hits. His season average is up to .261.

BY THE NUMBERS
3 -- Remaining Nationals who played in the majors for the Montreal Expos (Chad Cordero, Nick Johnson, Shawn Hill).

QUOTE TO NOTE
"We tried to value the player properly, and we tried to negotiate a contract to sign the player. But that being said, we're not going to be bullied into just giving a number just because someone says, 'You've got to pay X.'" -- GM Jim Bowden, on failed negotiations with first-round draft pick Aaron Crow, a RHP out of the University of Missouri.

Its simple. Defense and pitching win championships. Offense wins all star games. There is no way a guy hitting .220 should be voted into the all star game. Now there are two : Soriano and Rollins. I would feel OK with Rollins at SS because he is great defensively and that's the one defensive position, other than pitcher and catcher, that can control the game. Its not a popularity conte ...(more)

As a lifelong Reds fan, I really enjoyed watching Adam Dunn crush homers over the last 8 seasons. Now that he is gone and crushing them in Washington, I was hoping to see him as the Nationals representitive at ...(more)

With Strasburg drafted and hopefully to be signed, the focus turns to next years draft, where the Nats figure to have the #1 overall pick yet again...

With the disgusting precedent recently announced that Bryce Harper is going to forgo his final two years of HIGH SCHOOL, the news that his father dropped shortly thereafter bears watching...  He apparently will earn his GED and atten

I'm a Nationals fan who now lives over seas.  I get very little in the way of American sports on TV here, and oddly enough, what I do get, is not often the Nationals game.  I"m hoping some the the Nats fans in the states, the ones that can watch everyday, can give me a feel for where the team stands ...(more)

The "experts" are predicting that Manny Acta's days are numbered as manager of the Washington Nationals.  Let's hope that the Lerners and Stan Kasten aren't listining to them.  Fossils such as Bobby Valentine have mentioned as possible replacements.  I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jim Fregosi!  Rep ...(more)

As a Reds fan I hated to see Adam Dunn go but the Reds wanted to become a different team. As I suspected, he needed to be surrounded by better hitters than he was in Cincinnati. He was pitched around a lot, and more often than not had to take a walk or swing at the pitcher ...(more)

As an SDSU grad student, I can say that as bad as your season is, your outlook will look much better when Stephen Strasburg is pitching for you.  It'll probably be this year, and he'll be your opening day starter next year.  I ask National Nation to PLEASE NOT OVERUSE HIM...and occasionally give him some run support.&n ...(more)

So, with St. Claire canned, clearly ineffective, what's next? Acta? Seems that the Nats offense is pretty solid. Maybe call up and audition some more pitchers?

You only have three pitchers on the entire staff with an ERA under five, Ron Villone, newly acquired, and doing well,

 The Good:

Ryan Zimmerman. Signed sealed delivered. Dukes should be the next target in the off season. This is how the Indians kept that team together in the 90s.

XM is going down for the count with non-talents like Dibble and "Daffy Duck" Jody Mc Donald..

I have always been in awe with how DC was awarded a franchise without a foundation of experienced success oriented management. Jim Bowden never did anything to justify his position, not to mention  making him the initial hire...and lo and behold he ...(more)

I heard the Nationals signed Pitcher Storen who they took in the first round at pick # 10, he is believed to be a solid pitcher who they think will be thier closer of the future. Most people think he will be on the Nationals team in the majors toward the end of this season. I figure he will start in either AA or AAA to get some e ...(more)

With Flores going to be out for a long time or the entire season, is there any reason why we wouldn't put Willingham back there a couple days a week with Bard so we can keep his bat in the lineup?  He came up as a catcher with Florida?
