Nix has started in left field 10 consecutive games after Michael Morse injured his right knee in Philadelphia. He went 3-for-5 Friday in the Nationals' 6-5, 11-inning loss to the Marlins, hitting his fifth homer of the year. He appears to have an edge on the left field job.
Bernadina, called up when Rick Ankiel went on the disabled list, had one of the best games of his career, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, a stolen base and a highlight-reel catch in center field.
Manager Jim Riggleman has said he hopes Bernadina might be able to grab the center field job, but when Ankiel returns from the disabled list, the Nationals will need somewhere to put him. And if Bernadina becomes a backup, the team probably will have too many outfielders with Nix, Morse and Ankiel all fighting for time and at-bats.
"When Rick comes back," Riggleman said, "that's a decision we'll have to make."
