Notes, Quotes

Nationals will play musical chairs in the outfield · Roster Report · Notes, Quotes

--SS Ian Desmond got a day off against the Phillies after playing in 47 of the Nationals' first 51 games, starting 46 of them. Manager Jim Riggleman said he wants to get Desmond and second baseman Danny Espinosa more than 500 at-bats each, but doesn't plan for either one to play 162 games. Desmond came in as a defensive replacement in the seventh inning, and had a bunt single in his first of two at-bats.

--2B Danny Espinosa hit his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot off Roy Halladay in the fifth inning of the Nationals' loss to the Phillies. Espinosa is tied for the team lead in home runs, and is second among rookies in that category.

--1B Michael Morse hit his fifth home run in seven games on Monday, a solo shot to center in the second inning against the Phillies. Morse has recorded a RBI in six of the Nationals' last seven games, and his eight-game hitting streak is the longest by a Nationals player this season.

--OF Laynce Nix hit his eighth home run of the season on Monday, putting the Nationals ahead in the sixth inning with a solo shot off Roy Halladay. Nix is batting .305 and is tied for the team lead in home runs.

--RHP Livan Hernandez allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings on Monday, giving up eight hits and walking two. Hernandez hasn't won since April 28, despite pitching at least six innings in five of his six outings since, and making quality starts in three of them.

BY THE NUMBERS
3 -- Number of home runs the Nationals hit off RHP Roy Halladay on Monday, with Michael Morse, Danny Espinosa and Laynce Nix hitting solo shots. The Nationals are the first team this season to hit three home runs in a game off Halladay, who had only given up two home runs all season before Monday's game.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's tough, because we're playing great and staying in the game. But in the end, it doesn't add up. You just want to win. It'd be great tomorrow to score seven and make five errors and win the game." -- Nationals IN Alex Cora, on the team's continuing string of one-run losses. The Nationals fell 5-4 to the Phillies on Monday, and have lost 10 of the last 12 games . Six of those 10 losses have come by one run.
