Red Sox report: Inside pitch

Jon Lester has acted as both stopper and ace for the Red Sox all season, and the 24-year-old lefty wunderkind did it again Monday night when his team needed it most.

Lester did his best Josh Beckett impersonation in dominating the Angels hitters for seven shutout innings, but he also needed a little ninth-inning assistance from the offense after the bullpen couldn't hold the two-run lead.

Lester was 5-1 with a 1.41 ERA in seven starts following a Sox loss during the regular season and again showed in the decisive Game 4 of the ALDS why he's both the best antidote to a Boston losing streak and a certified postseason weapon of mass destruction.

Pitching Lester twice, or even three times, in a playoff series tilts the odds considerably into Boston's favor going forward -- and that's before one considers the other talented members of the starting rotation, a solid defense and an offense capable of scoring enough to win.

In three postseason starts, Lester has pitched 19 2/3 innings and has yet to allow an earned run in a baseball success story that's like a made-for-TV-movie in the making. Move over, Big Game Beckett and Big Schill, there's a new big game sheriff in Boston, and he looks as if he's going to be wearing Red Stockings for a while.

"Jon Lester is a man among boys out there right now," Josh Beckett said. "When he wants to throw his fastball 97 mph, then he can throw his fastball 97 mph right now. That's fun to watch. You just sit back at times and watch and say to yourself, 'This is something pretty special.'"

Lester was hitting 96-97 mph on the radar gun with a crackling, overwhelming fastball mixed with the same cutter and changeup combination he has utilized all season to great success. Lester simply overpowered the Angels twice in the five-game playoff series and was the difference between advancement and a first round exit. The win improves him to 2-0 in the postseason and lowers his overall postseason ERA to a microscopic 0.77 in 23 1/3 innings.

RED SOX 3, ANGELS 2: SS Jed Lowrie sliced a seeing-eye single through the hole between first base and second base that scored LF Jason Bay from second base in the bottom of the ninth, ending a riveting walk-off win. LHP Jon Lester tossed seven innings of shutout ball to give the Sox a 2-0 lead, but the bullpen faltered in the eighth and allowed the Angels back into the game. Lowrie and Bay both finished with two hits in the ALDS-deciding Game 4 victory.

We have hit the off-season and our shopping list includes a power hitter(s) and/or starting pitcher, so I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at our top prospects, since many will be asked for and offered in potential trades. These rankings are straight from SoxProspects.com and this thread is intended to spur debate as to which prospects we should hold onto and those we could offer in ...(more)

Pedroia told Peter Gammons that the Sox approached him about the idea of playing shortstop next season. For some background on this, Pedroia was a SS in college and frequently takes ground balls at the position in practice. The rationale is that the market for second basemen is better than that of shortstop, with Orlando Hudson a free agent and ...(more)

The holiday season may be coming early for Red Sox Nation.

Or maybe, I should be saying: the Halladay season is coming early. The reports came out Tuesday from the New York Daily News that the Boston Red Sox were in strong pursuit of Toronto

First of all, I think to properly do this, we need to assess each position individually and then look at the replacement possibilities. Those replacements can be via trade or free agency.

Catcher: Victor Martine ...(more)

Mark DeRosa on the BoSox?  He IS a FA right?

The man can play both corner outfield spots pretty well, 1B, 2B, and 3B well, and I'm sure he could spot-start at SS or CF if need be.  Heck, the guy's so versatile he would probably be the emergency catcher!  Oh, did I mention he hits pretty well?

Maybe I'm just silly happy over him because he helped me win a fa

Once again we let go of Alex Gonzalez and were gonna end up with another Julio Lugo or Edgar Renteria.  The Blue Jays signed gonzo for a 1 year deal worth 2.75 mil! and reportedly a club option for a se ...(more)

1) Trade with Detroit for Miguel Cabrera. He is only 26 and has a big bat that the Red Sox are looking for. It's looking more and more like San Diego will keep Gonzalez. There is talk about maturity issues with Cabrera, but those would be solved by Ortiz and Francona and t ...(more)

I just read that when asked by a reporter if he would consider a move to SS, where he played in college, Pedroia said:

"They've put it out there and I've told them I'm all for it. I can do it. I can't wait for Tito [Terry Francona] to call me and ask, 'Can you do it?' I can do it. I really want to do it."

I think this would be a great move considering the better a ...(more)

I heard last night on a local sports show that the Sox are looking into Scutaro.
They were comparing him to Julio Lugo, which I think is unfair.
I think he'd be a great pickup ---- a shortstop who can hit.

Thoughts?

The Red Sox decided not to pick up Alex Gonzalez's 6 million dollar team option which was a little pricey for gonzo.  But where are were gonna find anything better out there?  Marco Scutaro is 34 i believe and came off a carreer year and is poised for a letdown and is looking for probably more money.  Then theres of course ...(more)

(POLL) Wel after a very disappointing ending to the 2009 play-offs the Red Sox have some questions that may or may not be answered.  Who to keep and who to let go?

Jason Bay?  Red Sox should keep him but it appears they are going to let him walk.

The Royal Rooters, that's what a should've called my thread! How silly of me! Justa nice little spot for Sox fans to b!tch and moan like most of Bostonites like to do! But be forewarned, the rules are the same, talk of anything you want, speak your mind, just no politics! (or religion)

The offer was reportedly for 4yrs/$60mm, which is what a lot of people thought the Sox would offer. I think he is looking for 5 years. Personally, I wouldn't go 5 years with that average salary. It might be time to move tp Plan B and Matt Holliday.

(POLL) Everyone keeps on cryin for us to make a trade for Roy Halladay blah blah.  I know the guy is a very good pitcher and is very consistent workhorse.  But we would have to give up a major core of young prospects to get this guy and i dont think a 33 year old pitcher who only has one season left on his contract.  I thi ...(more)
