Phillies searching for utility infielder rather than Utley replacement

By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider
The Phillies appear to be comfortable with the idea of beginning the season with Freddy Galvis at second base, and are said by sources to be searching for a utility infielder available in trade.

The list of potential targets is long, but think of players such as the Tigers' Danny Worth, rather than a higher-profile (and older and more expensive) player like Brandon Inge of the Tigers or Mark Reynolds of the Orioles.

The Phillies remain hopeful that Chase Utley won't miss too much time, despite the knee trouble that has cost him all of spring training and will keep him off the active roster on opening day.

Scouts who have watched the Phillies are asking questions about their offense, with both Utley and Ryan Howard out of the lineup to start the season. That problem isn't easy to address right now, particularly since the Phillies seem determined to not add much money to their already-high payroll.

The infield depth is an issue they may be able to address, though. As of now, with Galvis in the lineup, both Pete Orr and Kevin Frandsen would stand to make the opening day roster.

The focus is on someone who can play the middle infield spots. While Placido Polanco has played a lot of second base in his career, the Phillies are said to believe that he wouldn't be effective there at this point in his career.
