Josh Hamilton hits 4 home runs, sets AL total base record

By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider
BALTIMORE -- Remember those people who were quick to anoint Matt Kemp as the best player in the big leagues?

I've got a question for them: Have you seen Josh Hamilton lately?

Hamilton hit four home runs in the Rangers' 10-3 win over the Orioles Tuesday night, setting an American League record with 18 total bases. In his last six plate appearances, going back to the ninth inning Monday night, Hamilton has swung 10 times, with five home runs, a double and 10 RBI.

He has more RBI in his last six plate appearances than Albert Pujols does for the season.

Hamilton's four-homer game was the 16th in major-league history, the first since Carlos Delgado did it in 2003, for the Blue Jays against the then-Devil Rays. The only player in major-league history with more total bases in a game was Shawn Green, who had 19 in a four-homer game for the Dodgers in 2002.

Hamilton also became the first player in 14 years to have six straight extra-base hits, since Ken Griffey Jr. did it in 1998.

Hamilton finished the night with 14 home runs and 36 RBI, giving him the major-league lead in both categories. Kemp began the night with 12 home runs, while his Dodger teammate Andre Ethier led the majors with 30 RBI through Monday.
