For the Rangers, it's Hamels, Greinke or no pitcher at all on July trade market

By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider

It's not exactly true that the Rangers are looking to add a pitcher from this month's trade market.

They're looking to add Cole Hamels or Zack Greinke.

In other words, they don't want just any pitcher. In fact, according to sources familiar with their plans, if Hamels and Greinke are unavailable or too expensive, the Rangers are unlikely to react by chasing any other starting pitcher.

Despite injuries that forced them to scramble for rotation help over the past few weeks, the Rangers don't believe depth will be a problem for them. Derek Holland threw six innings in a rehabilitation start Monday night, and Alexi Ogando is also on the way back.

Although depth may not be an issue, the Rangers have long felt a need for one or more true top-of-the-rotation starters. It's why they spent money on Yu Darvish, and why they moved Neftali Feliz to the rotation.

The Rangers believe that either Greinke or Hamels could be that guy. It doesn't appear that they feel the same way about Matt Garza and aren't expected to pursue him.

The Rangers have had scouts watch Greinke and Hamels, but neither the Brewers nor the Phillies are believed to be ready to pull the trigger on a trade.
