Nationals first-round pick may need Tommy John surgery

WASHINGTON -- Jordan Zimmermann came back from Tommy John surgery. Stephen Strasburg came back from Tommy John surgery.

At this point, the Nationals aren't scared of Tommy John surgery.

In fact, the Nationals say, when they made Lucas Giolito the 16th overall pick in the June draft, they did so fully expecting that Giolito would at some point need Tommy John surgery.

Well, some point may well be right now.

Giolito had to be shut down after just one professional start, and the Nationals said Monday that he will fly to California to see Dr. Lewis Yocum. While it isn't yet certain he'll need surgery, it seems the likely result.

Giolito just turned 18 last month, so he'll be pitching in the low minor leagues when he comes back from surgery. So at least there shouldn't be a Strasburg-like controversy when the Nationals limit his innings.
