Yankees expect Teixeira (calf) to miss another 10-14 days

By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider

The Yankees didn't get the best possible news on Mark Teixeira. But they didn't get the worst possible news, either.

Teixeira's MRI exam Monday showed an irritation of his Grade 1 left calf strain, the team announced. The Yankees said they expect Teixeira to be out of the lineup for another 10-14 days.

If it turns out to be 14 days, Teixeira would still be back in time for the final 10 games of the regular season.

Teixeira has already missed 11 games because of the calf injury. He returned to the lineup Saturday night in Baltimore, but said he felt the calf all night and irritated it on the final play of the game.

"I had to try it out," Teixeira said Sunday. "If I waited until it was 100 percent, I'd be waiting for months. I thought it was just tight, but obviously it was still healing.

"I thought I could play at 80 percent. I couldn't."

The Yankees, already slumping before Teixeira was hurt, have gone 5-6 in the games he has missed. Steve Pearce and Nick Swisher have played first base in his absence, with Raul Ibanez or Andruw Jones taking Swisher's spot in the outfield when he plays first base.
