Rays' Price 'thought the worst,' but should be fine for Friday

By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider

BALTIMORE -- So you saw that David Price missed a start last Saturday because of a sore shoulder, and you immediately said, "oh no."

So did he.

"I thought the worst," Price admitted Tuesday, after a throwing session that assured him that his shoulder is fine. "I feel like it's my job to be able to protect myself, and that was the first time I ever missed a start in my entire life."

Price is now penciled in to return to the Rays rotation Friday night in New York, although manager Joe Maddon said he will wait another day to make it official. Price, Maddon and pitching coach Jim Hickey all said they believe the shoulder issue is now behind them.

"I felt like I could pitch [Wednesday], or even tonight," Price said Tuesday afternoon.

Price sounded relieved, Maddon and Hickey a little less so, only because they were already convinced the issue wasn't serious.

"I wasn't heavily [worried] because I trust our training staff," Maddon said. "I wasn't stressed out."
