Giants hoping to keep Scutaro, but Cardinals, Yankees also believed interested

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Not surprisingly, the Giants want to keep their World Series-winning group together.

Also not surprising: They're facing strong competition in their bid to retain Marco Scutaro, who seems set to benefit from a good postseason and a thin market for infielders.

The Giants, who already re-signed center fielder Angel Pagan, would also like to retain Scutaro, according to sources. But the Cardinals and Yankees are said to be interested in Scutaro, who is 37 years old but whose versatility makes him a fit with all three clubs.

Scutaro played second base for the Giants, the same position he would play if he went to the Cardinals. He has added value for the Cardinals in that he would provide cover at shortstop if Rafael Furcal doesn't recover from his elbow injury.

The Yankees' needs are on the left side of the infield, with Alex Rodriguez heading for hip surgery and Derek Jeter coming off ankle surgery.

If the Giants can't sign Scutaro, they may look for an outfielder instead, hoping for someone they could pair with Gregor Blanco in left field.
