Reds lost out on Revere, now trying for Fowler

By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider

It should come as no surprise to hear the Reds tried for Ben Revere before he was traded from the Twins to the Phillies. They did try, according to sources.

It should come as no surprise the Reds have talked to the Rockies about Dexter Fowler. They have talked, sources say, and it's not impossible that a deal could get done.

The Rockies have been looking for mid-rotation pitching in return for Fowler. They talked to the Phillies about Vance Worley, before Worley went to the Twins in the Revere deal. The Rockies want to find pitchers with good control, so Mike Leake could be a fit as part of a deal.

For now, the Reds seem to be the best fit for Fowler. While the Braves checked in early, those talks never got serious. The Mariners have also shown some interest, but Fowler appears to be a backup plan for them.

The Reds have been seeking a leadoff hitter for months. They still haven't found one.

They like free agent Michael Bourn, but he'll likely be too expensive for them. Bourn's market has shrunk with Revere going to the Phillies and Denard Span going to the Nationals, but he's still likely to get more than the Reds are willing to pay.

The Reds are still hoping to re-sign free-agent outfielder Ryan Ludwick, and that's one deal that could happen soon. Keeping Ludwick, who had 26 home runs, 80 RBI and an .877 OPS, was a big Reds goal this winter.

Finding a leadoff man was another.
