Some good news for White Sox, as John Danks is on way back

By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider

NEW YORK -- At this point, the White Sox need hitters a lot more than they need pitchers.

Still, it's good news (and not totally expected) that John Danks is on his way back.

Danks was the White Sox's opening day starter in 2012, but he didn't pitch after the middle of May and had shoulder surgery in early June. He pitched for the White Sox in spring training but didn't look close to being ready to appear in a game that counted.

He does now.

"For awhile, he was off the radar," White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said Tuesday. "He's on it for sure now. He's definitely made a climb since spring training. That was only eight months after someone dug into his shoulder with a sharp metal object. We're hoping that climb continues."

Danks pitched for Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, in his second minor-league rehabilitation start. He walked five in five innings but gave up just two runs. Cooper said they have Danks scheduled for two more starts in the minor leagues but that the schedule is subject to change.

The White Sox are also expecting to get left fielder Dayan Viciedo back soon. Viciedo, on the disabled list with a left oblique strain, played his first rehab game for Charlotte on Tuesday.

Second baseman Gordon Beckham, who broke the hamate bone in his left hand on April 9 in Washington, said Tuesday that he expects to start taking batting practice on Friday. Beckham thinks he can beat the original timetable, which had him out until late May.

Entering play Tuesday, the White Sox were hitting .217 and averaging just 3.4 runs a game with Beckham and Viciedo out of the lineup.

"It's been a struggle to watch," Beckham said. "I've kind of learned what the coaches feel like, watching and not being able to do anything about it."
