Orioles prospect Dylan Bundy likely needs Tommy John surgery

By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider

The Orioles hoped that Dylan Bundy would pitch for them in the big leagues this season.

Now there's a real chance that he won't even make it there next season.

Bundy is visiting Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, and the expectation is that he will need Tommy John surgery, according to sources. While Tommy John surgery is usually successful, the recovery time is about a year.

Bundy won't turn 21 until November, so the news is hardly devastating for his career. But the right-hander from Oklahoma, the fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft, had been on the fast track to the big leagues until he hurt his elbow this spring.

The Orioles shut Bundy down from throwing, and he got a PRP injection from Andrews in late April. But when Bundy began throwing again, he felt more pain in his elbow and was shut down. He was examined by an Orioles doctor on Tuesday in Baltimore.

Baseball America ranked Bundy as the second-best prospect in all of baseball last winter, behind only Rangers infielder Jurickson Profar but ahead of pitchers like Jose Fernandez, Shelby Miller, Gerrit Cole and Zack Wheeler.

The Orioles are working the trade market hard, looking for another starting pitcher. When the season began, they had some hope that Bundy could fill that role.
