Barry Zito clears waivers, but obstacles to a trade remain

Barry Zito would be more attractive as a trade candidate if he could take AT&T Park with him. And if he left his contract behind.

But the ill-fated $126-million, seven-year deal is now into its final guaranteed months, which perhaps could make it more than just a formality that Zito recently cleared trade waivers, according to sources.

Zito makes $20 million this season, with a $7 million buyout coming, so it's no surprise at all that he cleared waivers (a claiming team would have been responsible for the entire contract). The Giants would obviously need to pick up much of the remaining money (there's more than $12 million left) if they want to trade him, but because he has cleared waivers he is eligible to be dealt anywhere.

The contract is just one of the obstacles, though. Zito is winless in nine starts away from San Francisco's AT&T Park this year, with a 9.97 ERA and a .418 opponents batting average.

He has been much better at home, with a 3.18 ERA in 14 games.
