Indians: Three chances to win one game to go to the playoffs

By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider

MINNEAPOLIS -- You'll read that the Indians clinched a tie for a wild-card berth with their win Saturday.

That's true.

You'll read that the Indians guaranteed that their season won't end with Sunday's Game 162.

Also true.

But really, the Indians' situation is even better than that. They need at most one more win to get to Wednesday's American League wild card game.

And they have three chances to get it.

If the Indians beat the Twins again Sunday, they're in, and they'll host Wednesday's game (with the winner Wednesday advancing to play the Red Sox on Friday). If the Indians lose Sunday and either the Rays or Rangers lose, they're also in.

At worst, if the Indians lose Sunday and both the Rangers and Rays win, there would be a three-way tie for the two wild-card spots. Since the Indians had the best record of the three in head-to-head competition, they in effect have two more chances to win one game (at home Monday against the Rays, or if they lose that, then Tuesday at Texas).

So that's it. Three chances to win one game -- Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.

Win any one of them, and the Indians are a playoff team for the first time since 2007.
