Injury to Michael Morse more serious than first believed, could miss opener

Nationals star outfielder Michael Morse is in jeopardy of missing Opening Day with a lat injury that has proved more serious than initially believed. Morse has batted just seven times this spring and hasn't played in 12 days due to a strained right lat that was initially called a day-to-day injury.

An MRI revealed no structural damage, revealed. However, the injury has been slow to heal, which is why the MRI was ordered in the first place.

The Nationals are having a rough spring, with Adam LaRoche, Rick Ankiel, Drew Storen and Chien-Ming Wang suffering a vareity of ailments. Wang is all but sure to be inactive for the start of the season with a hamstring injury. The last time he suffered a lower-body injury (foot), he wound up overcompensating in his delivery and suffering a shoulder injury; so the Nats don't want to take any chances.

The Nats will be cautious reinserting injured players into the lineup in coming days because it affects backdating they may want to do if the players start the year on the disabled list.

Meanwhile, the Nats broke an 11-game winless streak, beating the Mets, 12-0, today.
