Angels phenom Trout will make All-Star team, which will be announced Sunday

Angels rookie phenom Mike Trout will make the American League All-Star team that will be announced Sunday, it was learned Saturday.

There's been an ongoing debate in recent weeks about whether the 20-year-old Trout -- who isn't on the ballot -- would be voted onto the team by fans. He was a late-April callup and there was chatter about whether he should and would make the team. But in recent weeks the need to include Trout on the team became obvious. A case could be made that he's been the best player in the American League since his callup.

The speedy outfielder leads the American League with a .342 batting average and 22 stolen bases, and he has eight homers and 32 RBIs while providing a spark to the Angels, who started very slowly but are now in playoff position as a wild-card entrant.

The All-Star status of Nationals phenom Bryce Harper, 19, is less certain. He's also provided a spark for the injury-depleted yet first-place Nationals, but he was thought to be "on the bubble.''

That could mean he might wind up as a candidate to become the 35th man on the National League team. That isn't a certainty, either, though that might be a nice idea because it would give fans a chance to decide whether Harper, who also wasn't on the ballot, should be on the team.

All but the starting pitchers and 35th men for the All-Star will be announced Sunday. The starting pitchers will be announced July 9 by the All-Star managers, the day before the game. The 35th man for each team will be determined by a new fan vote.
