J.C. Romero opts out of Orioles contract; becomes free agent

Veteran left-handed reliever J.C. Romero decided to opt out of his Orioles deal after a month at Triple-A Norfolk for them and is now a free agent.

Romero was 1-0 with two saves, a 2.51 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings pitching in Triple-A for the Orioles. Romero has extensive experience and could be a viable lefty option for several teams in need. Scouts say he has looked good at Norfolk.

Romero, 36, started the year with the Cardinals after spending 2007-2011 with the Phillies, with only a brief stop in Colorado late in '11. He is 34-28 with a 4.15 ERA lifetime and could be a consideration for teams looking for a lefty in the pen. Interestingly, the Cardinals and Phillies are two teams with bullpen needs.
