Yankees didn't like price in terms of prospects for Victorino or Span

The Yankees will pay just $2.25 million of what remains of Ichiro's $18-million salary, sources familiar with the deal told CBSSports.com.

Yankees people also liked this deal because they believe Ichiro replicates what they are missing with Brett Gardner, who is expected to be out for the year with an elbow issue. Of course, Ichiro does it in a much more high-profile way.

The Yankees had looked into Shane Victorino and Denard Span but weren't sure if Victorino was going to be available (the Phillies are said to have suggested a high asking price, though they aren't committed to selling yet) and believed the price was "too high'' for them for Span.

To get Ichiro, the Yankees gave up spare pieces, D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar.

Ichiro gives them a speedy outfielder, like Gardner, who is still terrifc defensively and can play center field when needed.

Ichiro signed off on the deal to complete it.
